PRGR misreads

Recommended Posts

I have a PRGR (not the latest, but the one available early summer) that I use for swing speed training.  Quite frequently (1 in 5 times maybe), when swinging just a club (not just the speed trainers but also normal clubs) with no ball, the unit will register a swing and ball speed.

Is this common/normal?  If so: any guess if the swing speed is accurate?  If not: thoughts on what might cause it?  I've tried positioning the unit various distances from the swing but that doesn't seem to change anything.

Thanks for any ideas!

I notice similar issues, however, my problem is that it only registers the swing, but nothing else when hitting the ball sometimes.

Also curious whether it's accurate after seeing so many misreads. For example, a huge pull into the side netting at the range, will still come up with a good distance with the driver.

I read many people give good reviews about the acuracy, however, i'm a little disappointed overall. Could be the dark conditions, i read that can have an effect ?

Do you still hit something, like a tee peg perhaps, to trigger the ball speed ?

@Andygolderson: since the device doesn't read spin, it will likely be pretty far off for distance for anything that isn't a "straight" shot.  When hitting balls I've found it to be pretty accurate on the ball speed compared to my SkyTrak - distances vary depending on the quality of the shot.

@hammersia: thanks for the suggestion of raising the device up - I'll give that a try in my next session to see if it helps.

Ah, good point, I never thought about that.

+1 on raising the sensor. particularly at the range with a raised mat from the ground, I often use a headcover to prop it on, or use 2 of those rubber tees from the range that li on the side. mini-tripod would be the most sensible method 😉 it's got screw insert below.

I will test again this evening see whether there are any misreads.

Got one of these little monitors 130-A.   Today used for the first time int he garden into a net.

Works brilliantly on my 6 iron.  Gives really accurate numbers that I tend to see on trackman.

Problem:  Tried my driver and its not picking up ball speed etc and clubhead speed seems a little low compared to what I know I get on Trackman.  I have about 6 feet before the ball hits the net.  Was working for irons so not sure why it wont pick it up with driver.  Any ideas?

Did you have it on the W1 setting for driver? W things to get it as accurate as possible. Keep the device level with the ball and keep it within 3.5 to 5 feet from the ball.

Has anyone noticed this causing higher than normal smash factors? On the range today, i had a smash of 1.54 (157 ball speed 101 swing speed). No idea if it is the head i am using (Epic Max LS) since I heard from a fitter that track man has issues reading the CHS accurately due to the sliding weight.15EEC6C4-625D-4A27-82F5-525AEF46988D.jpeg.ceb177ce4103044e6b4cc16817425ffd.jpeg.e1e3b16845729c441d3e2c731a8f647c.jpeg

Maybe it just misread either the clubhead or ball speed.  Are you just talking about one reading that was off?

Many. i had a few others this session with smash factors of 1.57. As well in my swing speed training it is struggling to pick up my swings accurately. My dominant side swings are slower than they should be and my non dominant are faster than my dominant swings

I don't have many misreads, but if I do, it's more often the clubhead speed that's off.  And I usually only see that if it's a big mishit.

Figured out the issue. My apple watch was interfering. Took it off and everything was more inline

Back again.  Getting misreads a lot.  Placed the device as recommended 3.5-5ft at ground level pointing towards the target and also tried it on the box slightly raised .

I get decent clubhead speed numbers with the 6 iron and Driver but way off with 8 iron and PW.

I might get say 79mph 8 iron and then next one it will be 111mph.  (On Trackman I am 84mph with 8 iron).

Smash factor is way off reading very low frequently 1.25 with irons ona  very solid strike. On Trackman sucha  strike would give 1.39-1.41

Driver ball speeds seem very low compared to Trackman.  On Trackman I am 160-165mph.  Only awful strikes would read in the 150s.  Yet even a really solid drive gives me 157mph on the PRGR.

Any ideas if this is a bad unit or just a cheap monitor and cant expect better?  I bought it based off soe youube reviews comparing it to Trackman such as 2nd Swing

Realized my @MaxSwingSpeed traininer I think is causing the issues. Usually on the lightest weight since it doesn't have a lot of area. No idea how i can get around this besides proping it up.

So I brought my unit to test against a Trackman last night.

Ball speed is identical to Trackman.  Swingspeed is 2-3mpoh faster on the PRGR with 6 iron and driver.  Carry nowhere near Trackman usually overestimating iron shots by 10 yds minimum.

I also tested the PRGR on the outdoor grass range yesteray.  It usually cant read PW or 8 iron shots.  Misses them at least 60% of the time.  Club speed goes from 70mph to 96mph to 110mph with the PW.  All over the place.

well now I am confused. IS shot scope right or my PRGR? I doubt I got 50 yards of roll all though I couldn't tell since the shot was blind.

I only use this thing for ball speed to validate well struck shots on clubs. I don't pay attention to distances or club head. The club head speed will vary wildly depending on how close or far you place it next to the ball. I haven't played around with it enough to find the optimal distance, because I usually just plop it down right next to the ball on the range to confirm strike efficiency.

E.g. I know a well struck 8-iron should be north of 115 mph, etc.

Maybe you found out by now, but you don't put the unit down by the ball. You put it on level ground 3-5 feet behind the ball on line with the target.  It's picky about that.

Another tip.  My distances (inside my basement golf room) were way short. I found more accurate distances by taking the PRGR club head speed, multiplying it by 3.16, then subtracting 85.2 yards from the result.  Much better distance numbers.

No, I don't remember where I got that formula 🙂

Remembered:  Got it from The Tutleman Site.
