In Macgregor-speak...11 was a PW. 10 was the putter. So I'm carrying 3-9, 11, SW, Putter. No gap wedge or lob wedge.

I prefer 1i and 2i over 5w.

My set up is 2w 1i-9i. 11i (for MacGregor) PW (for Wilson), SW, putter.

I have a bunch of Drivers but I can’t hit any of them.  Same with 5ws. Wish I could and hopefully next season I’ll get that sorted out.  Mid season I discovered a 2w which I’m more consistent with than a driver or 3w.

I’ll usually do half sets with my Jones bag.

I don't have a rigid set up. What goes in the bag will depend on the course being played, length, ground and rough conditions.

However, I rarely carry more than 2 woods, generally preferring a 1 or 2 iron to a third wood. Whether I carry a driver and 3 wood or driver and 5 wood depends on the course. Driver and 4 wood is a common compromise. Occasionally when the first cut is lush, the Ginty will nudge a club out of the bag as a rare 3rd wood in the bag.

I usually play 3-Pw of my chosen set. If these are ultra modern by my standards (late '80's) with a sub 50* Pw then I may slot in a gap wedge. I very rarely carry anything more lofted than my SI of choice.

Very much "horses for courses"!

Me it can be very subjective because I have so much stuff---- Most of the time I play my FC=4000s 2 thru 11 with either one of my Ironmaster Putters ( have a plethera of them too) and my 57 Mac Velocitized driver and usually my 57 Mac 2 wood and a 54 Mac 3 wood. I have also been known to dump the Jones or Hoofer bag out and go to picking mix and match. Endless possibilities with my stash---- When I was able to walk with a few clubs I usually carried a driver 1 iron 5 iron 7 iron 11 iron and some type of SW and putter.

Right now sadly I am not playing any of my steel shafted vintage stuff because of the nerve issues in my back. Hopefully by playing my graphite shafted stuff untill spring my back nerves will calm down some and I can go back to my steel shafted stuff. I had just recently gotten a Power Bilt driver set up to try when root cause of my continuing back issue surfaced. Man oh man I was looking at that driver yesterday wanting to hit it. My brain was saying go for it and my back was screaming no no NO!!!. The back won out sadly.

When I was playing vintage rounds this summer I was gaming a Pittsburgh Persimmon, laminate 3&5W, Ginty, 5-PW, SW and putter.  A fairly similar setup to what I play with modern clubs.

I suppose that my vintage rounds were modernist anyway as they were ~1980 for the most part with metal driver and CB irons.

A style of club designed by Stan Thompson that featured a "keel" sole.  Particularity noteworthy with  wood fairways to facilitate getting the ball up and away from thick lies.  A trouble out type club.  There were also metal Ginty's.  Precursor to more modernist rail soles.  Most that play classic Ginty's speak highly of them.  See Robert L's pic above (top left club).  Another view:

Good stuff here @Foozle and something that is overlooked in today's game.  Matching the clubs to the course is invaluable.  I do the same with 15-16 clubs that I pick and choose down depending on which course I'm playing.  Plus, I almost never have a full 14 clubs in the bag.  Usually more like 10 or 11, unless the track is longer than normal.  The only guarantees are my 5i-PW, 56, and putter.  Everything else gets adjusted to the course.  Played a lot of rounds without a driver.

The Ginty has the loft of a 7-wood and the length of a 4-wood. How good is the Ginty? Put it this way, if I was good enough to play in the US Open then the Ginty would definitely be in my bag. Same with the British Open. It's that good for getting out of all but the very deepest, gnarliest rough.

And bunkers, divots, gopher holes...  You get the idea.

It's not a fairway or a hybrid or a cross between the two.  It's a club all to its own IMO.  The original rescue club.  I suppose one might say that it was the evolution of the Bulldog from hickory era.

I have several Gintys one is labeled 7 wood at 26* or 29* if I remember correctly---- 7 wood lofts can be subjective My V-Steel is 21 and then I also have a Adams Clone ( ADP Brand) that is 24*

Good call on the Bulldog.  Definitely can see the shape on vintage hickories of the type.  Google came up with a number of pics showing varying amounts of keelness (apparently a made up word).  Yet another example of things being Variations on a Theme.

FWIW.  As I'm sure many know, Gintys were complete lineup of clubs.  From D through SW.  Saw a complete set at an estate sale once.  Was half interested, but they were asking to much and didn't feel like haggling.  A pic grab from a set currently listed on the Bay.

Kneelness may be a made up word but I have heard boat guys use the term down here especially the sailboat guys. Something to do on regular boats with the V angle on the kneel--- Sailboat guys use it to describe the fin on the bottom of a sailboat as in the shape and how long it is. Also a sailboat the fin has solid lead poured into part of it to trim the balance. I learned the last part working at the scrap yard. One of our customers up in New Bern NC salvaged sailboats and other boats we bought the lead. Usually went up there once a month so and picked up big chunks of salvaged lead with the drop deck. Some of those chunks weigh 2000 lbs or more. We usually kept a open top trailer there for regular metal like engines etc and would do a switch out when it was full

When I play classic, its been driver/3w, then irons.  I have a couple 4 woods, but have rarely taken them on the course; tend to prefer a long iron in that slot.

Now that my distances are decreasing, that may change.  But haven't yet.

You could make a pretty solid case that Callaway with the War bird sole plate was a metal wood version of a Ginty.  They sure didn't have the heft to cut through the rough, but the shape was true to form.  The first versions came out in 1995 IIRC.

The next true keel sole in club evolution would have been the Taylormade Raylor.  The last version of those being circa 2009.

Raylor

Cleveland also had a rare version called an Emerald--- I have been told they are rare--- Not sure what year--- Found mine on the scrap pile. Mine is 22* I have hit it and I hit it as well as I do my beloved V-Steel 7 wood--- Hold on to it because I have it for back up in case ( Lord forbid) anything happens to my beloved 7 wood. The Emerald has smaller rails than a Raylor but the rails are sorta filled in with a denser material copper like color

I've seen Gintys with metal heads on eBay. I would guess that they would last longer than Gintys with wood heads, although my Ginty has a laminated maple head and is pretty solid.

When is it a hybrid and when is it a fairway wood?  The lines get blurred.  I always figured that a Raylor was a bit of a Frankenstein with a heavy keel sole, compact head and fairway length shaft.  The original Callaway Heavenwood had a pretty compact head for a fairway wood.  Shallower than say a comparable 7W of that era.
