Utility/driving 4 iron

Just got my Maltby TS2 4 iron head and Tensei shaft. I'm hoping this 4 iron will hit the sweet spot between my Sub 70 699 (I should have gotten the Pro) and Mizuno MP-18 Fli Hi.

Have a Titleist 718 TMB 4 iron with MMT 105 shaft. Serves its purpose well. Not longer than my set 4 iron on center hits. It does launch higher (at the same loft), descent angle is steeper, and much more consistent on mishits.

Titleist tmb 4 is 24*...still uncertain about it as it feels harsh though it is effective....

I can't imagine why TMB 4 is harsh.

I hit the 716 TMB line, and 718 TMB line, both were sweet.  I used to play Titleist 716CB's along with 716 TMB 2i.  Since 718 TMB line was introduced I carry 718 TMB 2 iron, which blends nicely with my 620 MBs & CBs.

I am always fascinated when I think I miss hit the ball, and the ball still flies relatively straight and long.

For the last 5 years I've played a 21 degree hybrid in place of a 3 iron, with 3 wood being by next longest club.  The gap between my hybrid and 3 wood has always been the largest in my bag (about 25-30 yards).  I am considering switching to a 19 degree hybrid that will play more like a 5 wood and narrow the gap.   I think it would be cool to then swap out my regular 4 iron to a driving/utility 4 iron to have a little more power with my longest iron.  Has anyone had success with this set up?  Most utility irons that I see are 2 or 3 irons so I am curious if anyone is gaming a 4 iron.  Any favorites?

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got my 4th 4 iron today (that's 2 new 4 irons in the last month). The Maltby TS2 is actually pretty damn good but I found a Titleist U-500 with the shaft I like on eBay and I couldn't resist. I've put it in the bag ahead of the Maltby just because it looks nicer in there with my Titleist hybrid and fairway wood.

I carry a 16' 4wd followed by a 2i and 3i-PW, etc.   I can't imagine what value a 'utility' 4 iron brings.

I was in the rough late weekend after wonky drive on Par 5; used 4 iron to get down to short iron in, another time used 3i out of rough.  Granted, the rough was only 2.5-3" deep, still it was rough.  If the rough was 4-5" deep, I'd use a short iron to get back in play.  I won't be baiting off more than necessary.

And yet you use a TMB 2. Why bout use a CB 2 iron to match your set? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️#winkwink ….

The harsh feel is puzzling.

JP changed the shaft it came with, figuring the Project Pxi were the issue. Installed a Rifle FMC 6.0 which is a long-standing fave of Jack Pearsall.  Still feels harsh. 5 iron ap2 feels great, same shaft, same grips. The tmb functions as it should, but it feels like Word not allowed. Looks cool. Mystified.

I had a set of 716 T-MB’s and I thought they felt terrible on full swings at start, but oddly found them to feel great with knockdown punch shots….. I started to consciously hit it a bit higher on the face with some steeper digging type swings, and they felt better after that. I never had a problem off the tee, but the turf interaction didn’t work for my swing.

I am convinced the sweet spot on those clubs are a groove higher than almost anything I’ve hit before. I started to hit them well, but figured they took more of an effort then the blades I played for 20 years before them. They seem to work better if you de-loft the club at impact and have major shaft lean, at least that was my experience with them YMMV!

I would except neither of the 620 series iron sets offer 2 iron.  I have been using TMB 2 iron cause its specs and blade design match up nicely with my irons.  My previous set of 716CBs had an 18' 2 iron, and loved it but later bought 716 TMB 2 iron, which was a bit longer.

I never liked the u500 or 510 as it was too large with different specs.  So I went with 718 TMB 2 iron and quite happy.  That 718 2 iron is amazing.  Yesterday off a 289yd Par 4 I smacked it into a breeze, dead down the middle, measured 215yds.  Not bad for an ole man.  Unfortunately, it ran into some mushy turf. grr...
