Golf Announcers Reading Putts??

It doesn't bother me at all when they do it. Plus, if they've been stationed on a specific hole all day they've probably already seen 30+ players putt from the exact spot they are talking about at that current moment.

I kind of like hearing someone say "Everyone that has come through has missed this putt low because they aren't reading enough break", and then seeing that guy do the exact same thing 🤣.

If I had one of the last tee times, I would spend the morning glued to the early TV coverage for just that reason.

I miss Johnny Miller. I'd love to hear him reminisce about his 63 at the US Open.

What I'd really love, is to finally see a video clip, (that absolutely no one has ever posted), where Johnny initiates the conversation about said 63.

  • Often they are wrong on the read
  • We will see the break once the stroke is made
  • Why do we need constant talking
  • European Tour coverage doesn't inundate us with constant banter and they don't' or very rarely try and read the putts

So you’re mad because you don’t want to know the read before the putt is hit?

They pretty much always call the break correctly because the have the green data, they have been seen the action, and many of these guys have played these courses and know the greens.

You often can’t see the break or slope on tv so if the announcer shares that it’s double break, then picks up speed, it helps follow.

lol, I mean, I understand getting annoyed at Faldo’s secret delight when guys hit bad shots (it’s just the competitor in him ; ) or the idiot McCord (thank god he’s rambling at his tv now) or Zingers huckleberry routine.

But this actually annoys you?

Ya, I like it when Johnny would say

”Easy putt”

Like if a guy had a 6 or even 7 footer that was straight uphill. Good reminder of the level these guys expect to play at.

Pretty much 95% of the time I watch golf on mute at this point. With some sports the announcers (and the crowd noise) actually enhances the experience. Golf? Announcers (IMO) add little, and can verge on the irritating.

At the 1995 Ryder Cup I recall being amused when I saw that the broadcast on a guys Sony Watchman was on about a 15 - 30 second delay from what was actually happening. I suspect the announcers today still see the putt happen before they they announce what they think it will do.

And the commentators that do are normally the on course ones who are following the group around, not the ones sitting in the van.

I literally don't care...read the putt like the U.S coverage tends to do or don't read it and just have casual conversation like the Euro coverage tends to do I just love golf. It really just doesn't matter as both are just trying to do their part as the athletes play the game to help you along the journey.  Watching any sport on mute is horrible in my opinion as their is no emotion injected while watching it.  Can you imagine watching the Ryder Cup on mute....that would be silly in my opinion.

I do find it interesting when they point out that everyone has misread a putt, but I agree that there really is no added entertainment value in them reading the putt themselves.  But they often do it in response to someone in the booth asking them what the putt will do, so I guess they don't have much choice.  As someone else noted, the broadcasts for the European tour feature this much less, if at all, and, like that poster, I find them much more appealing.  Those broadcasts don't seem as concerned about 'dead air', nor are the broadcasters trying to be the star of the show, at least as far as I can tell.

What annoys me is the director choosing to show a Pro spending 1-2 minutes lining up a 4'-6' putt and the announcers feel compelled to talk through the whole process.  To tell you how he/she would putt it - "I don't think it's outside the hole".

Well, I agree on spending too much time showing guys lining up putts, especially short ones, sometimes I think they could just skip them and get back if the guy misses.

But I don’t mind this announcer insight since, as you mentioned, it’s often accompanied by info on issues guys have had with that particular putt…

Nobody is getting it to the hole.

Everybody is it playing too much break.

Yep caddies give the hand signals on every shot when they have one of the announcers in the group

Yep, and yet some guys sitting on the couch can tell the info was incorrect.🤣

The clinical term for it is Announcer fixation syndrome.....LOL! .....I kid.

Most of the time I couldn't tell you who's commentating and what they said during any telecast....with the exception of Ken Venturi.

Wow really? If I heard Ken say something on the telecast this weekend I’d have myself committed. 😉

LOL, because it is useful information, most of the time they know what the putt is going to do, and if they are talking about something useful they aren't babbling about something else.

Babbling about something else?  I used to enjoy Renton Laidlaw talking about the WWII airplanes taking off from the adjoining air field, or some such nonsense.

Instead of telling me something that I just saw with my own eyes.

Just depends on the "something else" - I consider any musings along the lines you suggest, or the old random thoughts of Peter Alliss to be bits of treasure.

Can't help it - when I met Jim Nantz last summer he was still driving Ken Venturi's old golf cart that Jim "inherited" when Kenny passed away.  Apparently he drives it all over the place near his Pebble Beach home and I can attest he is one personable and engaging fellow! So don't anyone start dissing him!!

Lol.  Perhaps that's one of the many reasons the European Tour is about to be "rebranded" the DP World Tour.

I think Johnny Miller was a great announcer, he was not afraid to be honest.  As far as I am concerned, Miller earned the right to reminisce all he wants.  Nay says on social media haven't earned squat.
