Interesting U-turn. Seems the grass wasn't greener....

If you go back to the original statements made by a Cowen and Mcilroy in March/April (“Bannon will always be Rory’s coach” etc), this was always on the cards.

I might be totally wrong but I am sure reading or hearing a couple of weeks ago that this was on the Card? Am I just making that up and this statement from Rory is just confirming what seemed to be widely known in any event.

Yes, Rory’s camp made a statement,

We, at team Mcilroy, the coaches (putting, ball striking, short game), trainers, dieticians, psychologists, pilots, psysios, spiritual leaders, and psychics,

Remain steadfast and committed to our  goal of Rory not winning a major for another 7 years.

🤣

Yep.  At this point in his career, it's all about the majors.  Doesn't matter what he does until he wins another one.

Bottom line is he doesn’t see a fade and that change was never going to bare fruit. Especially with driver.

Agree.  His natural shot with driver has always been the draw.  It's also the shot that essentially cost him the Masters that one year when he hooked one OB when he was dueling with Cabrera IMO.  I think he was trying too hard to make the fade work and ultimately felt uncomfortable with it.  It's nice to be able to work the ball both ways, but it's also a double edged sword if you ask me.

Rory could save a fortune and just hire me as coach!

I’d hide all his clubs and just be like

Competition is getting tougher every year and to win you can not have a weakness any week. I think his putting stroke looks fine he hits a lot of aggressive putts that are just off a little bit and as far as his hitting the ball no issues at all.

He just needs some putts to fall and he did win on a tough course last year.

Do you legitimately believe that if you watched Rory practice putting that he would be missing 10 out of 100? I don’t, I imagine he’ll probably miss less than that and while watching him you’d probably wonder how he ever misses a putt.

It’s all what happens when the heat is on and I don’t believe a putter has anything to do with it.  Sadly, we’ve never seen a player have putting issues like him and reclaim what they once had for anything more than a tournament or two at a time. It’s not like he is yipping them or anything but once you start missing momentum putts for a long period of times it just continues and the pressure builds. That’s what happened to Adam Scott, Sergio, and Stenson most notably. It seems to happen to the best ball strikers but maybe that’s because ball striking keeps you on tour so that’s only my perception because everyone else would have lost their card after 1 year of that and would never be heard from again🤷🏼‍♂️

The minute Rory starting thinking

I have nothing to prove

He was done.

Rory 1.0 had something to prove! He was a short, chubby, kid that had to put up and shut up and beat you to death!

He was desperate to win to give himself a sense of pride and self worth.

Then, he got $100MM 🤣

He was at the top of the pyramid and everyone gunning for him.

Now, guys like TW and Jack. They hate to lose more than they like to win. They are paranoid, have huge egos, and they just can’t walk on the same planet with people who beat them.

So, they do what needs to be done and don’t let that happen.

Rory, he could win another major. But unless his very soul is starving for victory and sickened at defeat, he won’t live up to that potential he had.

From what I have seen, Rory's putting issues are not really stroke related.  Most of the time he hits good putts.  However, he either has an alignment issue (unlikely, but not impossible) or he is not a good green reader.

I think he struggles reading putts.  He misses too many straightish putts where he burns the edge.  Those are over reads.  Over reading straightish putts comes from anxiety.  You see break, but aren't confident in how much, so you add a little (maybe from just inside the cup to just outside) and boom, burn the edge.  Over time that just erodes confidence.

That’s interesting TP.

You think it’s over read or just lack of touch and tempo in his stroke?

But definitely see what you mean like he anxious about missing low too much and add in some on the spot anxiety the affects how smooth a stoke he makes.

His stroke is pretty good.  He is not Epee fencing like Willy Z. or the Duff.  His reads are just off.  Especially true on the small breakers which are the toughest to read (IMO).

I keep saying what do we expect from Rory? What players outside of Tiger or Jack won a bunch of majors, cooled off, then came back to win a bunch more?

Maybe he can pick up one more, just like Phil/Vijay/Ernie, heck even Payne Stewart. But we really expecting him to go on another run? Not saying he can't, he has the game and is young enough. I mean, Phil had zero majors at his age, so it can happen.

Id wager he misses way more than 10 of 100 from the 7 foot clock drill. It’s harder than it looks.  If not.  Why don’t tour players make a bettter percentage from 5-8 feet ?

and that’s me agreeing with you partially. Most of his issue is in his head. But it’s concentration and confidence but you Gain that by doing the work and seeing them go in.

He does not consistently strike the ball in the same place when putting. Watch next time he plays, sometimes the blade stays low through the ball and other times he strikes it mid ball. It must change the starting line and speed each time.

Anxiety could be a good call.
