Spalding Robt T Jones Registered Irons

I picked up a set (2-9) of these irons with matching serial numbers (#272848 A) and "Cushion-Neck" hosel. Does anyone have specs on these clubs. I think they are 53-54 vintage and one club has a partial Tru-Temper shaft label. From what I've found on the Internet, it appears the "triangle" mark indicates a "medium weight T or S shaft."

Appreciate any info you might have.

some players still like those old blades.

do yours have updated grips or the original leather sleeves?

The original leather sleeves had been replaced with modern grips (Velvet cord) which are now very old and crumbling. I am going to replace them this weekend and try out the clubs before the snow hits in Chicago.

I have a set of these 2 iron through 9 iron. True Temper Dynamic shafts. I do not think the triangle means anything other than a trade mark of sorts. Mine have a B at the end of the REG. Serial #.

I picked them up with some persiomons, a putter and an all leather stove pipe bag. And they are definitely prior to 1953. May be even late 30's or just after WWII in the mid-40's.

#1, #2 & #3 persimmons wood set:

Spalding - Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Percussion Weighted Kro-Flite

Reg. #1312, w/ True Temper Step Down shafts & original grips.

2 > 9 iron set with matching serial # Reg. 284880-B:

Spalding - Robert Trent Jones Jr. Registered Stainless Steel

w/ True Temper Dynamic shafts & original leather grips.

Putter:

Spalding - Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Stainless Model

w/ no line face and original leather grip.

Golf Bag:

A. P. Corp. - Atlantic Products - Trenton, NJ. all leather

stove pipe bag w/ rain hood cover and paddle locks on zippers.

very nice  gear.

could be a mid to late 40's set up.

your woods have rounded heads, earlier ones were more pointed at the toe, IIRC.

lightweight shafts A or T set, which indicates easy R or Senior flex.

that's what the diamond stamp on the head reveals.

the head, shaft and grip were all matched.

try to find the longest grips available, diameter that you like. originals were 13".

that will help match the vintage look.

there are dotted face, like yours, and plain score line model irons.

I'm thinking the plain face might be newer, when they figured out it cost less to build the dies.

enjoy.

Thanks so much for the info. Love you clubs. I hope to be able to get out next week and try out these irons - I grew up playing blades like these so it should bring back some memories (hopefully good!)

  • 1 year later...

Hello, I’ve got an old set of Spalding Robert T. Jones clubs that my dad had, they bare the following, ( Spalding, Registered  Cushion Neck, Kro Flite, Reg. No. CJ 111920 A, Robert T. Jones followed by a triangle. I’ve got a email to Spalding asking for info. Anyone with another search info shoot my an email. If I find anything out from Spalding I’ll repost it. Thanks for any help! There is no telling how old these clubs are, I can remember them as far as I can remember, and I’m 68 now!

Have a great day!

The Spalding RTJ clubs were first produced in the early 1930’s with pyratone shafts. They were produced in quantity and many are available. I think I have a set in my storage locker.

The first generation steel shafts had a pyratone coating to prevent rust.

A few pictures would help with dating them further.
