French Lick golf trip

I'm looking at a guys golf trip to the French Lick area.  We usually stay a week and play 18 per day.  What comments do you have about the courses and facilities?

I love the Pete Dye Course. It is an all day rate though, so you are better off playing it twice to get full moneys worth. Donald Ross course is also very good, a lot of people like it more than Pete Dye (I am not one of those people).  I would make the trip one day to play the Pfau Course at Indiana University. It is awesome and one of the best courses in Indiana. It hasn't fully matured yet and can play pretty tough, but is is great. Sultan's Run is also in the area. It is a unique course, but feels pretty gimmicky in my opinion. Some really fun holes though and a very fair price.

I loved both courses, but I can't see spending a week there. 'Definitely need to play a few on the way there and/or back. OP, are you driving in?

We would probably fly into Louisville, then drive to French Lick.   At this point I'm just exploring possible trip destinations.

Chariot Run is a fine course just outside Louisville. 

 

Have you played in Indianapolis? I'd say flying into Indy is a better choice, as there are a half dozen excellent public courses there.

Agreed.  Indy is highly underrated.  

 

French Link is a resort that has golf vs it being a golf resort like Bandon, Sand Valley, or Streamsong.

A week in French Lick would be rough IMO. Casino is small, food choices limited. Dye/Ross/Sultans well worth playing for a couple days (play all day at Dye and Sultans). But after that it's a hike to anything decent. As suggested Chariot Run is fantastic but a solid 75-90 minutes from French Lick. Pfau at IU in Bloomington is worth a go, but is about the same distance in the opposite direction.

 

Indy has many viable options and much more to do when not golfing. While the best public courses (aside from Brickyard) are on the north side, it may be worth considering breaking up the trip and spend a few days up here and a few at French Lick. The choices around Louisville are more limited if you decide to break it up that way, but there are some good courses there too in addition to chariot.

As others have said, break up the trip. French lock is fantastic for a long weekend trip. Unless you are willing to spend a ton of time in the car there isn’t enough golf around to stay there that long, IMO. 
 

You could very easily fly into Lville and out of Indy or the other way around. 
 

I really enjoy Sultans run and don’t agree with the gimmicky part. Yes there’s a waterfall behind the 18th but its not really part of the course. The one complaint I hear that I agree with is that all of the par 3s are downhill and 3 of them feature water.

From St Louis, we would do a quick 2 day trip.  

 

Day 1: Drive, play 18 at Sultan's Run.  Check in to the hotel, eat and gamble.

 

Day 2: 36 at the Ross Course and drive home.

I've only played the Ross course and it's awesome.  If you like classic Ross courses it's hard to beat.  It was restored at some point and the course is pure.  There are some awesome ball busting par 3's which must have been insane back in the day.  That being said I don't know if you can get a week out of the area as others have said.  Good luck.

the Dye course is too penal ... my group didn't have much fun playing it ... it's windy as hell on top of that mountain/hill, and you have to have played it several times to get a feel for where you can hit it ... other two courses are great ...
