Nostalgic Balls from the Past

I was going through a bucket of golf balls yesterday and I found a bunch of old Top Flight X-outs. I forgot how much it used to play these as a kid, they were cheap and you could get a bag of them at Canadian Tire for a good deal. I kind of miss those.

 

 

Are there any balls you miss from the past?

Besides Titleist, one of my favorite balls in the sixties and seventies was the Dunlop Maxfli. Both Red & Blue Max were great balls.

Lots of those old brands, like Dunlop, are still around, but have become the “value brand” balls. It just goes to show how good Titleist has been over a long period of time.

Great video! Fun to go through the old buckets and take a trip down memory lane. 
 

I gave away two five gallon buckets of old balls at a garage sale awhile back. I’m sure there were some jewels in there.

I think it's luck as much as anything, aside from the obvious money angle.  If not for the Kobe earthquake, or if Spalding actually had money...  who knows what the landscape would look like.

I am totally boring.  I need to expand on nostalgic golf balls a little.  Maybe a Dunlop Dot ball or two, especially wrapped in foil, would be a nice addition.

It’s that Christmas orange wrapper again! I wish that was still a thing, it would be satisfying to unwrap a new one on the first tee.

I've been on this site for a bit.  Whenever this topic comes up,  I'm always surprised that no one mentions the MaxFli DDH.  

 

The 'red' DDH surlyn was a great ball.

The only surlyn ball I ever played was the Titleist DT.  That was only for a short while before I transitioned to Titleist balata balls.  I preferred the softer feel and better ball control of the balata balls.

Yes.  The Titleist DT was my 'go to' ball in those days.  I wanted to like the balata balls of that era but I just never saw the benefit.  I wanted the ball to last more than 5 holes and the surlyn spun plenty with durability to last more than 1 round provided ya didn't hit a cart path..

 

I remember playing in a high level amateur event back in around 82 or so.  On the first green a much longer player than me noticed I was playing a Top Flite and I noticed he was playing a Pinnacle.  We both had a laugh because neither of us understood the why balatas were so prevalent.  

 

Firm conditions I opted for surlyn wound.   Greens receptive,   I opted for Top Flites or Pinnacles.

Going a little newer than classic, I miss the old solid core wound balls from Maxfli, like the Revolution, the A10, the red and black M3 balls.  Played those a LOT.

 

In the early days of Callaway's entry to the ball market, they produced 2 piece versions of the HX Red/Blue.  They had covers as soft as their 3 piece counterparts.  They were awesome, I was really disappointed when they vanished.

Here's a selection of the wound balls I have. I actually have quite a few boxes of the wound DTs because they're my favourite when just knocking around with persimmon.

Back as a junior in the UK, I liked to use balata in special events, such as the city junior championship, but it was too pricey to use for everyday golf, or even the weekly medals. I remember that I liked the Slazenger balatas more than the Titleist ones, but that might have had more to do with price.

Looking forward to trying the Rextar Surlyns.

Another plug for Maxfli DDH. I used it for years as an everyday, casual round ball. When it was tournament time or a money game it was Wilson Staff or Hogan.
