Anyone using driver length shaft in 3w?

Recommended Posts

I was testing out an rdx blue 6s shaft on my driver yesterday to see how it compared to my current ventus velocore blue 6s. It was ok, but seemed to be about 20 yards shorter.

Then for no apparent reason I decided to try the rdx blue into my 3 wood. To my surprise, it was dead straight in addition to bring longer than ever.  Since my 3w tends to be my "hit it as far as I can" club rather than trying to hit a specific distance, I think I'll keep it for now and see how it actually performs in the course.  Anyone else doing something like this?

I typically use my 3W off the tee when accuracy is more important than distance. As having a shorter shaft is a component of increased accuracy this combo wouldn’t be beneficial to me. When hitting off a fairway the only time the extra yards would (maybe) help is when I can try to hit par 5’s in two, which is much less frequent than using the club off the tee.

I won't use a driver-length shaft in a driver!

My driver is 44½" and my fairway metals are 42½ and 42".

The driver is about an inch longer than I had used with actual wood, and the fairways are a half-inch longer.

The only reason I remember that is that I still have most of my old clubs in the basement.

I like to assume my stance in the same zip code as where the ball is lying, but that's just me.

This is very interesting. Always great to hear about improvement, very encouraging. What length shaft are you using then?

Not sure of shaft length off hand, but it is standard length for a pxg driver. I also realize that part of it may be that the rdx blue shaft may just work better for me than the evenflow riptide that I was fit into.

I have a 48G Aerotech Claymore that I was using in my SLDR.  I pulled the tip and put it in a XR16 Pro Deep 14* head and it plays around 44".  Can use it off the tee and hit it as far as the driver and straighter. Still working on hitting the extra length off the deck.  So I carry a stock Flash 3 wood turned to 17*  as my fairway wood.

I normally play everything shorter, but I tried testing a 3 wood at 46 inches at the range a few years ago and it actually worked pretty well from a distance and consistency standpoint.  It didn’t require as many reps to get used to as I thought it would.

That three wood was probably the start of my tinkering addiction.  Maybe I’ll give it another go now that I have more experience.

Bryson?

Just as the length of iron shafts isn't carved in stone neither is the length of wood or hybrid shafts. For every person going with a longer than 'normal' driver shaft there's probably two going with shorter, and there's no reason one can't do so with any or all the clubs in the bag. All of my clubs except my LW, SW and driver, are longer than stock, by up to two inches in the 2H, because that's what works for me. You do what works for you.

Current woods setup...

Driver = 45.5" 58g

3W = 44" 65g

5W = 43" 75g

7W = 42" 75g

Like you, my 3W is my fairway "grip it and rip it" club as I am going for max distance with it, ie trying to reach green or near on par 5.  If I want control, I use the 5W.  Unlike others, I don't find the 3W any straighter off the tee than my driver, so usually hit my 5W if it's really tight.
