Butchered my PLD, HELP!

I was lucky enough to receive this PLD a few years ago from a Ping sponsored player.  Unfortunately it came with this crappy magnetic headcover that did not fit right.  Ping didn't make one for this size putter at the time.  During a round on freshly sanded greens, sand found it's way in between the headcover and top line.  It created this super terrible scratching.  This happened probably 2 years ago and I haven't used the putter much since.  I normally do not mind wear and tear on my clubs, often a beat up putter can add some charm.  But this.... I hate how it looks.  Any idea on what I can do at home to smooth it out or cover it up?  I am not really interested in paying a few hundred bucks for a full refinish.  Here she is in all her glory.  Second pic really shows you what I'm dealing with

Harmless fix sharpie. 

 

Ballsy and potentially expensive fix automotive sandpaper. I do not recommend this one because the chance of you messing this up and having to pay someone to fix it is very high and likely. Will also ruin the finish.

Yikes. Believe these are a PVD finish so the only way to really get it looking right is a refinish. You could also see if you know someone that could do a light bead blast of the head to strip the PVD then rock it raw and let it rust.

This would be sick.  Are there any other ways to strip the entire finish?

You might have some luck with a good soak in hydrogen peroxide. Do this at your own risk though and take the head off the shaft to make life easier on you.

Just send it back into Ping to have it refinished. Look for an aftermarket head cover that fits better as the Ping covers that come with them fit terribly.

If this is a tour issue PLD, I would think twice before sending it in to Ping to refinish as he may not get it back!

Strip it fully Or sell. If you don’t pay for the refinished, you’re going to pay with time and aggravation

I'd entertain maybe just kinda sanding the entire top line to a matte like finish... if you could achieve an even sort of look across the whole topline it wouldn't look out of place. Just an idea, I'd probably try the sharpie first, but sharpie ink can end up having that kinda purple look to it, and will likely rub off inside the headcover. But a refinish is probably the only way to get that loving feeling back lol

Yeah I’d honestly just green scotchbrite pad the top line until it was uniform.

A buffing wheel with the right compound might work.

Decided to tape it off and go with the sharpie.  Now I have an alignment block

I would not do this.  These aren’t supposed to be released in the wild so he may not get it back if he sends it in.

Can anyone recommend a good headcover for this?  A regular mallet one is too big

Deliah Covers makes covers to spec it seems and they're cheap but quality so probably look at them.

The sharpie you put on there will eventually start to turn a blue/purple color and will look off for sure. 

 

When it does wear off I would maybe try some acetone and rub VERY lightly to see if you can break up some of the etching in the PVD coating. 

 

I would try some chrome polishing compound as well or something like an auto finishing glaze and a polishing pad or a really good microfiber towel. I would try something like a Maguire's 205 finishing polish. I have had luck in the past using this on etched surfaces back in my auto detailing days...

take it to a sign writting place and get them to put a vinyl strip on it. Could do it white with a dot or even get them to colour match it and do the whole top line! I used to have a toulon tour that had a sight line I didnt like. Took it to my mate whos a sign writter and he put a vinyl sticker on it with a strip. Looked clean and also helped!

I have had great luck in removing scratches, golf ball marks on driver heads, discolorations with Meguiars x 2.0 scratch and blemish remover. They come in small bottles.
