Headed to the Open Championship, Tips and Tricks?

My father won a pair of lottery tickets to the Open at St Andrews next year, and we are turning it into a full golf trip.  What tips and tricks do y'all have for me?   For example, is it worth getting a waterproof golf bag?  I plan on regripping all of my clubs pre trip.  Is it worth going with top dollar waterproofs?  How many pairs of shoes?  So many questions 😩

Congrats on getting tickets! I will be there a few days as well. Can hardly wait!

 

Answering your questions:-

1. Waterproof Bag? No;

2. Top dollar waterproofs? Get the best you can, they do last longer;

3. Shoes? If you are playing every day and wear traditional shoes - two. If you go for more modern styles, one would be enough.

I think it's good practice to wear a tam during all spectating at the British Open.

Drink lots of beer...but only the stuff on tap in a rundown, dark, local pub : )

 

Whisky is good, too...

If you want to look like a plank wear tartan. The rest of us will laugh at you. 

 

St Andrews is easy walking, trainers will do. And it could just be dry and sunny in July. If so bring sunblock as the sea breeze will cook you alive. 

 

You will not need a waterproof bag. One pair of well cushioned shoes should suffice. Wedges with narrower soles and less bounce could be helpful if Scotland has had a dry spell. If you want the best waterproofs buy Galvin Green when you get here. They will last you for years. 

 

Avoid Belhaven "beer" as it is foul. Tennent's Lager is excellent. Enjoy a Tunnock's Caramel Waifer biscuit. One of Scotland's greatest achievements. Try Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas. Coca Cola is not the number on soft drink. Irn Bru rules Scotland. St Andrews is an affluent but small town and the choice of eating out is limited. If you can get a full board deal or stay in Dundee or some other larger city.

I haven't gotten my email yet, but I haven't given up hope on my tickets 😉 

 

Take a pair of FJ weather pants. June is good weather though. 

I only had one pair of leather golf shoes, its fine. 

Make sure you have a lighter stand carry bag, leave the tour staff bag at home. 

Caddies are expensive but completely worth it in my opinion.

We went to Saint Andrews in 2015 and Portush in 2019.  Do not plan to return on the Monday after the event. Wait until Tuesday or Wednesday.  The flight will be less expensive and, if there are weather delays like in 2015, you would be able to watch the Monday finish.
