build your golf swing around your physical limitations

Quite often, a pro or a low cap golfer says, you are plenty flexible to get to a full 90 degree backswing. In some cases, I'd object to that saying the physical limitations, pain and lack of range of motion is real. Take a look at the article below and video at the end of the story. I am a sr golfer, with a frozen shoulder, low back pain and now trail knee pain. What's your thoughts on this? I am not able to complete my backswing and lead arm can not get near parallel. Are there any other good work arounds while I work on my mobility, outside of flaring the trail foot and dropping it back off the target line?

In fact, physical ability naturally conditions the way you swing, it's not something deliberate.  What you see on tv is just fiction for us.  There's always the teacher that wants you too swing like Rory or Tiger but you're overweight and get out of breath somewhere on the second nine.

It helps for senior players to start getting a bit in shape, especially regain some mobility and you revise your swing alongside.  I'm sure you can still play good golf.

There was a guy here, not an instructor, who used to say to me all the time "to hit it like Tiger you've got to do this...". My response to him always was "I'm an overweight, middle aged non athlete, I can never hit it like Tiger and shouldn't be trying to".

Look up "Strong18" on You Tube.  He has a set of 6-7 stretches for men over 50. Great stuff.

Bending the lead arm seems to help get the club up in the BS.  Another YT video suggests letting the lead knee move in towards the ball on the backswing. I've got to mess around with these set up "cheats" to get some more turn.

doubt youd get more speed bending the arm and you are risking inconsistency

Allan Doyle won 2 senior US Open championships . Below is is a screen shot of the top of his driver backswing , so going back to parallel or even to 10:00 is  hardly a requirement to play at the highest levels

It is virtually inevitable that we deteriorate physically as we age . If one has the time and the ability to work out, then some of this deterioration can be reduced and delayed.

Despite lateral movement of his centers, and lack of “shoulder turn”/staying in flexion, I chose not to tackle, and simply moved ball back, handle forward, and opened  face at address.  Contact and ball flight improved dramatically.

Great solution, mikpga.

I think this is one of the best ideas for so many people that can get immediate results.

bought out by private equity.

I'm a Sr golfer too.  My swing looks nothing like it did 30 years ago and shouldn't.  Knee surgeries, bad back, arthritis, etc...have taken a toll.  But I've just kept adapting my swing over the years because the only thing that really matters is face position at contact.  My backswing is quite a bit shorter than it needs to be, but so are my drives.  To compensate, I got better with my 5-7 irons where I would normally hit my 8-PW on approach.

Swing your swing and own it.  Practice until you hit the same spot on the club face 85% of the time, and then fine tune from there.  If it ain't fun or hurts too much, then it ain't worth the effort.  There's no spot on the scorecard to record how good your swing looked.

Also, I hate those days when my brain decides to make a microscopic swing adjustment to avoid pain.  I don't feel it or notice it until my ball flight becomes erratic.  Oh and then there's eyesight problems affecting our ability to read putts.  "Damn, it looked like there was a little slope there."

The only good part about getting older is having more time to play.

Nice, Mikpga. It's great to see a pro using a work around and working with a senior golfer like that. I think this is area that is greatly overlooked in the teaching industry.

flexibility looks pretty but is overrated. Some people are just trying too hard and need to accept the Steve Stricker swing and just play from there.

Besides the lack of cocking the wrists (I am really good at that, lol), what are other Steve Stricker concepts to follow?

Watched a video below talking about externally rotating your trail arm and forearm, past 90 degrees. Due to past and current frozen shoulders, I can only get it to 75 degrees. Getting it to 90 degrees would be the waiters tray position at the top. Is this why in the backswing, I can only get it to 75 degees in the backswing, 90 is parallel?

I play at the forward tees at an Executive course so I can reach any green with two good strokes.  Except for one hole in which if I play farther back, it takes the OB out of play.

At age 69, I play a blend of senior and regular tees to get a course distance where I can reach every hole in regulation. Makes golf fun again and still quite challenging!

Just an older guy with 7 or 8 clubs and a MacKenzie Sunday Walker bag

I feel a "full" back swing takes you out of the swing... there's no need for it.  Plenty of power from a shorter swing.... not to mention the accuracy is off the charts in comparison to a full swing, well actually the accuracy is the reason for purposely using shorter backswing....

Oh but the pros have full backswings..... uh ya cause they've hit a million and one shots and play everyday so they can handle it..... everydayyyyy

Ever hear of a couple half decent golfers with short back swings that hit plenty far called John Rahm or Tony friggin Finau 🦒

Thanks, Barfolomew. I just came to the same conclusion, work with a shorter swing! A punch shot comes to mind for the irons. Just need to think of how to play a similar shot with the driver or 3 wood off the tee.
