Would love some swing tips? I’m a bad golfer grinding to get better

Recommended Posts

hi everyone

so I’m a pretty bad golfer (usually score around 100-110 but for the last couple months I’ve been really try to work on my swing. I’d like to thing it made a lot of progress since my building has a golf sim room the last few weeks (unfortunately the sim is broken but I still go down and hit). Below is a link, any tips would be much appreciated.

I’m extremely motivated to play better than my friends next summer haha. They’ve all been playing golf much longer and all make fun of me.

You have an athletic transition , so you already have an advantage

Problems

1. Setup

a.stance is too wide - with middle  irons your feet  should be about the same distance apart as your shoulder blades- with a driver your feet should be about 1-2 inches wider.
b.Although it is hard to see without a dtl video, it looks like you are reaching for the ball a little too much

  c. You flare your right foot - this is OK if you have  a restricted backswing , but you do NOT, so square off your right foot. Doing so will make it easier to rotate going down

2. TOP of the BACKSWING position -refer to screen shot

At the top you should load into the inside middle of your right foot. It looks like you are  loading more towards your left foot at the top. Part of the cause of this is your too wide stance .

Compare the position of your head and the angle of your right leg to Tiger’s at the top

A drill to practice the correct loading of your right foot is to take your stance , place your hands on opposite shoulders and rotate your shoulders , while keeping your head steady.

Stand a little closer to the ball.

Post a dtl swing.

Looks good so far. You really just need a lot more reps at this point.

Based on your swing I’m willing to bet your short game is more the reason your shooting in the 100s still.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

I realize that distance is king but short game , like BrianMcG says, really helped my longer game and overall score.

I think I read in the little red book, maybe,  about Harvey telling Tom Kite to shoot at targets at the range, 4, 5,6,7 irons, (all of them plus wedges) all at the same target. I spent two winters doing little else. I picked the same target at about 75 yards.

It really made me forget about swing mechanics and more about feeling whatever I had to do for each club to hit that target. For me, where the ball ends up doesn't have anything to do with me having a pretty swing.

The other thing was to understand club face. I visually thought my club face, at contact, was the same as it was at address. Started doing slo motion swings and discovered club face was open at impact. Rather than muck around with more changes (which may or may not effect club face) I began set up with a closed face position. Now, when I connect, club face is pointed at target or slightly closed and ball generally ends up in the direction I want.

The other thing I worked on was keeping my lead arm straight. I want to get the club back to the same position as when I set up. Otherwise I'm  topping it or digging in. Its bad enough having to deal with non flat lies. I didn't want to add having a different length coming back to impact due to a bent arm

This darn game is all about physics. and I didn't like physics in school.

You actually have a pretty decent swing, but something I would mention is where your left knee travels. That lead knee comes a little too far inside when you turn, and therefore you try to correct by sliding it outwards in your downswing instead of turning with it. My guess would be your miss is usually either a hook or push, with your knee and how far away you seem to stand.
