Has golf ever lost it's charm to you?

Sup guys, I just wanted to vent a little and see how you feel about the current world of golf today and what you do when maybe the game is just not as fun as it used to be.

I'll jot down a couple bullet points as I don't want to be to verbose in this since I am just having a hard time processing this, I've been golfing for a decade and have had a sudden disinterest on arguably something that is largely part of my personality and life.

1. Being on WRX gets exhausting, I sometimes try and just get the perfect clubs without working the swing that matters the most.

2. I'm a 3.6 HC (short game saves me)  but play with a flip, it sucks because I'm a bigger dude (tall, large) and see some of my smaller friends pound the ball efficiently and at times yard in front of me but because I can't turn properly I don't bomb it and my irons come up short. I usually club up twice just to hit the green.

3. I've tried for months to shorten my swing and reduce wrist hinge so I can make the turn and not slide and throw my hands but to know avail, I've paid for countless lessons and nothing works

4. Perhaps the new culture of golf that I guess is more "cool guy" is really annoying, tee times hard to get and now all people want to do is bring their GF with them and have some sort of part instead of golf.

With that said, I usually can't wait to golf on the weekend, and now with 2 tee times in my sights for thanksgiving I just can't seem to get excited for it. Have you ever taken a long break? What made you want to stop playing?

Nope, I've just had better things to do before now. I really enjoy playing as often as I can (3-4 days a week currently).

<edit> I play solo 95% of the time, so tee times are rarely an issue unless I really want to play by myself, then I hit Vernonia.

Not golf but my previous sport, the second it was no longer fun or I dreaded training/competing I had to step away, it started as a short break, then continued into me walking away from the sport altogether. But in the past I'd take like 2-3 weeks off, rest, recover, don't think about the sport and I'd be itching to get back at it. But for some that doesn't happen, maybe takes and extra week, maybe a year maybe never again. It's really up to you and what you want to do and what you want to enjoy.

I really do think if I can shorten the swing and remove the steepness I would have more fun, just not fun spinning the ball 250 in the Texas wind or worst with the wind 😂😂😂

Golf is great today!

I wasn't athletic enough to play golf when I was younger.  When it came to picking teams half the time I wasn't picked.

I learned enough golf to do a Par 3 in regulation, two 3 irons and a long putt.

Now I have plenty saved for retirement and enough seniority to have dibs on vacation time.

I can take any afternoon off if there isn't a meeting and someone else in my department is in the office.

I fully recovered from a stroke that paralyzed my right side.  While I had tons of therapy for a few months after the event, I was on my own after that.

Recovery stops only if you stop trying to get better or lack the tools needed to figure out how to fix it.

I learned a lot about fine tuning muscle memory playing darts in my basement.  I have a net in the back yard and a putting mat in front of the TV.

A yard long enough to practice chipping!  I received a new 9I yesterday and got to spend fifteen minutes chipping balls back and forth across the yard.

My swing is consistent enough be able to sensibly do course management.  And long enough to reach the green in a reasonable number of strokes.

I'm often the shortest adult on the course, so I'm fine with clubbing down and playing short game.  Take the easy shots around a hazard. Speeds up play.

When it comes to playing with others my strategy will be to chip closer to the pin and read other's putts.  Unless I have a better option like hitting to an uphill lie with no break.

Well like numerous folks on here and at my club said at least I am keeping active. I do not go to the course everyday but like you I do some stuff at home. I hit into my net. I also mess with the wedges around the yard with whiffle balls. Was for a while swinging my Skilz Ball trainer which sorta got me into shape but I ended up overswinging it ( totally my fault) and getting my damaged back nerves enraged. Like you I had to revamp my course management and like Clint Eastwood says "a man has to know his limitations" I used to be very aggressive but also toned it down. I always had a good short game so I am honing my skills back on that. Bottom line stay active my friend

I know I shouldn't generalize- but it is the snowbirds from one particular province to the north that can be a  bit trying. Others from that land are great

All activities are open again down here so maybe they will find other areas of amusement

I now have enough confidence to put the foam balls away and practice finding regulation balls in the fall leaves.  One of each color,  white, yellow, and deep pink.

Being able to accurately hit that 5 yard chip is extremely useful on an Executive course with small greens.  It didn't take all that many rounds to hit the pin.

I feel you, most are good people but you know what they say one bad apple....

Sadly, the bad apple started early this year. Was playing a local semi private course, members get advance tee times, discounts ect. The snow birds I suspect from a certain area were insistent as members they could add people to play with / right after them despite a full sheet  while checking in 🙄

Intriguing topic, here’s a few brainstorms for your bullet points.

I got into golf in earnest in middle age because it was a great way to hang out with my brother when Covid hit.  I’m happy to play bogey golf, single digits… once in a blue moon 🙂 Two seasons of effort under my belt and I have a few thoughts, many of which echo lots of golfers:

clubs: be realistic with your budget but get the new game improvement clubs if you can afford it, if not no worries, get the best used set you can afford, but definitely get fit, (I will add as a budget option, I measured myself and pings color dot system was spot on with my fitter - 1/2 inch over standard and green dot).

The forum is a great resource when you are researching a specific question, been a big help for me in clubs and shoes.  The internet is a tool , use it, don’t let it use you.

Find 1,2, or 3 people you really like playing with.  I also am blessed to have a local course that doesn’t doesn’t load up t times.  If I book as a solo, I play solo.   Duo/duo etc. Such a great meditation and good for developing my game.  Twilight golf can be particularly good for this type of play.  Go with courses that have a good feel and culture for you, when it’s good it’s great.

get at least a few lessons with a good teacher that teaches to where your at.  I’m a decent athlete and active but being shown the finer points has helped my iron play and most importantly my body health. The swing just feels so much better.

finally, have other interests.  This is true even for the pros, Paul Casey is an avid distance biker, Jack fishes..

Anything you Play is supposed to be fun.  I’ve gone through zones of being a little obsessive about golf and over playing has made my body hurt and made my game worse.  Winter has arrived in Minnesota and I’m enjoying getting back into drumming 🙂

Was at a 1.8 but struggled to play to it at away courses and wanted to get to scratch. Took video golf lessons where they tried to change everything but my grip. Rapidly got worse and began hating golf, and especially the way I sometimes acted (or at least felt like behaving) on the course, and later at home with wife and kids.  Couldn’t find my old swing I’d had since starting golf almost 60 yrs ago.

So I quit, for 12 years.  Now I’m back but with a new, better attitude and enjoying the time outside w my friends.

Do you mean Quebec? 🙂  I have a home in Jamaica and Bahamas, so I won't be troubling you folks in FL. 😅

Ha! Lived in Ft. Lauderdale for a couple years. Certainly played with my share of snowbirds. Most very nice. Except that my favorite cart girl on one of the local courses swore that "Je me souviens" (the slogan on license plates from Quebec) translated to "Does not tip". 🤣

LOL a lot of folks in the service industry here would agree with her from what I have heard

That just irritates the hell outta me......

Some places I eat at have a "tip cup\jar\glass" in front of the register. It usually just has loose change in it. If I spent $15 on my meal I'll still put $5-10 in the jar when I leave, worth it to see the staff's eyes light up. They work hard for the  BS they have to put up with on a normal day.

Golf is fine, some of the people around the game are not.  It's a subset of club membership that truly need to GTFO of the game.  Whether they conspire to monopolize tee times, break various rules, or have no respect for their fellow members, the course, the game, or the employees that make it all possible it can be annoying.  Oh I'm sure it's worse now than it was 2 years ago.
