Which club do you consider your weakness?

Recommended Posts

A weakness some rounds, but a hot club others.

My Callaway OSize 4 Hybrid is more of a wild card? Regularly the 4H is in play on our uphill par 3, long approaches, and tight par 4 tee shots. Some days I have the beautiful bumblebee humming shots that are almost laser-guided... other days it's a flat-top that goes 50 yards, or a slap slice the clips the tree line 20 yards from the target.

Solving the riddle: I probably need to take a lesson, maybe even a 9-hole playing lesson (when it gets warm again).

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Driver no doubt. Got to learn how to properly tee up the the 460 cc driver. Constantly teeing up too high for fear of the low club face hit.

Driver…it is the one club that has held me back for years and this year was one of my most difficult. Some days just pure terror on the tee box when holding it.

Really surprised at the number of players who don't like their driver.  Easiest club in the bag to hit.  With all the launch monitors and demos available, you'd think that everyone would have that sucker aced.  Guess not.

Wedges.  Pitching is abysmal due to lack of play/practice/touch.  Putter and top end clubs are normally decent.

Putter

While I've never had a real issue with my putter, it's just something I never practice. A few months back I switched to instinct putting (heads up?) and that has all changed. I still don't practice, but I have so few 3 putts now I don't even care.

This was from 25 feet on Monday, I laughed.

Fairway woods for sure. I have a 4W that is ideally just longer than my 17 degree Super Hybrid, but I tend to hit them about the same distance because the increased height/spin from the wood.  I don't know if something like the UW would be better at the top of my bag, but something similar to the Super Hybrid at 15 degrees would probably be money.

For me it's driver.  And it's always been driver.  Until the last couple years, I was reasonably long off the tee, but direction was not always particularly good (intentional understatement).  My better scores are almost always on days when I keep the ball out of the trees.  Or worse places.

My irons ....all of them.  Doesn't matter if it's a blade or cavity back or even a bigger game improvement type.  It's the worst part of my game.

Same. Zero time to practice and hit the range this year and my iron game went from my best area in 2020, to absolutely abysmal in 2021. Weirdly enough, my driver went from 4-5 penalties a round, to maybe 1 per round this year... which means all things considered, I'm still shooting the same scores.

Putter.  I have no problems practicing full swings from driver down and my short game with all my wedges (PW, GW, and SW) until the cows come home but I rarely practice my putting since I think it is boring for me.

The only time I actually use my putter is when I play for real.

In the aggregate, it’s probably putter - especially the mid range putts you need on occasion to make birdie.  However, despite becoming fairly reliable most of the time, driver remains the one club that can drop a steamy deuce on my score card with little warning…

Wow.  I’m shocked at how little putter is mentioned here.

I won't call my putting a strength, but my tee game is enough of a problem that the putter can't compete for bottom of the barrel.  🙂

edited to add:  I looked back to my time in double digits.  Went with 2003, where I was a 12 at start of season, finished at 11.  I had 32 rounds posted that year.  In those rounds, 14 of them had ESC adjustments, with a total adjustment of -29.  All because of driver

Driver here as well...  I will go through periods where I just decide to switch drivers and I will hit the new one well for a few weeks, think I have found the one, then proceed to miss fairways for the next few months, repeat cycle.  I probably never should have switched out of the Mavrik, hit 14 fairways in one round, haven't sniffed that since I moved it.  Last round, I hit 3 FIR.  The game is SO much harder from the junk.

Interesting responses.

The ones that surprise me the most are those saying the 60* LW.

I'm curious as to why you think that is? Does this apply to full swings, pitch shots, chips, or all of the above?

If full swings, I'd probably lean towards saying that there's almost always a better (easier) club for that distance than a full swing LW. Sometimes not, but easily most of the time.

3 wood off the deck, it's a tee only club for me. Been contemplating pulling it from the bag, but I have all other areas decked out well and no clue what to replace it with. I use it off the tee quite regularly though, so it still gets it's use. Guess I'll just keep it until I stumble over something that I really want in my bag and doesn't make another club redundant.

The 5W spot in my bag has been occupied by a 5W, 3H, and utility iron, and I don't particularly like hitting any of them. I rarely touch them. I'd carry 13 clubs, but it's not like the extra club in the bag is hurting anything.

3/4/5 irons. Phased them out and using a 7W and most likely 4/5H after that, just more forgiving and easier to elevate
