PXG 0211 DC with MMT 80 Swingweight?

I asked PXG the exact same question about 6 weeks ago.  I was told the highest the swingweight could get up to was about C9.  The 0311XP with all the little bolts allowed more flexibility and they could get them up to D2 with that shaft.

Interesting.  I wound up calling them and the rep I spoke to told me that C9 was the standard swingweight with the standard Z5 grips, and with the midsize grips they would come in closer to C7 or C8.  But he got in touch with the build manager or whatever and emailed me back with "Midsize grip is going to hinder us getting to D1-D2. D0 possibly, but with the midsize, just hard to add enough weight. STD grip should have no issues in achieving D1 and D2!".

So I'm thinking I will order with the midsize grips built to D0 or as heavy as they can get it.  Then If it still feels too light I'll look into getting some light weight midsize grips or use some lead tape as a last resort.

What affects swingweight will be mainly clubhead weight change and club length.  The change in the grip weight will not be a change that affects swingweight when you waggle/swing the club as it is in the pivot of the hands/lever (lever length x lever head weight is what will cause you to feel a difference).

Yes, it does affect the swingweight scale since the scale is set for a standard 50g grip.

I use midsize grips and my swingweight is based upon a standard 50g grip and then once the midsize goes on the club it makes zero difference in feel.

Our veteran clubsmiths have long warned about changes in grip weight tricking the SwWt scale into a lower reading. But, you can't feel it much when you swing club.

Simplest solution is to go +1/2" which will give you 3 more swingweight points.

Whether or not that bothers you in other ways is personal to you.  For irons, I think it is a valid way to alter the swingweight, unless you just can't handle the extra 1/2 inch on the longest iron in the set.  That's the only particular iron length in the set that wouldn't also be present in a regular length set.  If you know what I mean.

I was told by my local PXG rep that they build most of their irons to the C9-D0 range. Personally I think this comes from their design team being former Ping guys and for years Pings SW was targeted at C9-D0.
My new 0311P gen3s are due in next week and they are +1/2” and built up grips…they are suppose to be coming in at D0-D1..

The potential issue is that pxg irons are already 1/2" longer than most.

0211DC and 0311XP are 1/2” longer but the 0311P and 0311T are more standard length.

0211DC heads are about 7g - 8g lighter than the corresponding Gen3 0311P heads when I was putting my set together recently.

If you buy the ferrules made for the PXG irons from Golfworks or BillyBobsGolf you can add tip weights and assemble them like any other iron.

I have done several PXG sets over the past year and typically play my irons off a 37.75” 5 iron at D2 and have had to add tip weights to most builds to get to D2 at a slightly shorter build length.

0211DC’s were the hardest to hit my preferred SW as the 3/4” short and lighter heads meant I had to add 8g to 10g +/- to most of the heads.

Agreed. I do not consider grip changes at all when it comes to swing weight.

But C9 sounds good to me. I was always a “heavy swingweight” guy. But I had a set of irons built once that were cut a little short by mistake and came out to C8 — I always insisted on D3-4 — and I loved the lighter swing weight. Overall weight was the roughly the same as usual, so good weight overall, only the swing weight changed. I found it was actually heavier shafts that suit me, not a heavy balance. Now I target D-0 as swing weight and if it is C9 or D1, that’s fine.
