Ping i59 review

Recommended Posts

Picked up a set on a whim, had a shaft (Nippon Modus 3 105s) that I have been curious to try and Black color code which works for me in Ping. Standard Loft specs.

I have had a few range sessions and 1 round, so I’ll try to post more as I get some more game time with them.

My current gamer set is Srixon Zx5 (5 and 6 iron) and Zx7 (7-P) with Nippon Modus 3 120s. I am currently a 6 index.

Looks: absolutely phenomenal. Blade like, but not too intimidating at address at all. Perfect top line for me. The satin finish is utterly perfect and looks like it will be extremely durable. There’s something about the extra grooves on the face that I like at address.

Feel/sound: certainly not as soft as the Srixons, but it is a good solid feeling, not harsh at all. Sound is solid as well—a nice deeper pitched click. I briefly played i210 in the past and I’d say the feel is considerably better on these.

Playability/performance: I think the main conclusion so far is that these are super consistent. I feel like every good shot I hit on the range has the same trajectory, lands in the same exact place. These are not game improvement irons by any stretch of the imagination.

On course, I was really pleased with the trajectory and spin. I missed a few shots (obviously) but they still flew the distance I was hoping for, so there is some MOI forgiveness hidden here.

One important note is that I find the i59 to be shorter than similar clubs—maybe 5 yards shorter than the Zx7. My initial impression is really good though and once I get over the small distance loss, I think the consistency is going to win out.

More to come…

Not directed at any one individual but I’ve noticed something of a trend in descriptions of experiences with the i59’s.  A common recent complaint is a lament about the trend toward very strong lofted irons compared to lofts from 10 years or so ago.  But it seems when Ping delivers an iron with slightly dialed back lofts, it is often noted, “yeah they feel nice and are consistent but they’re 1/2 club shorter than my current set”.  Not sure you can have it both ways.

I gained a full club & half over the s56, so not all of us lost yardage switching to i59

Also wanted to comment more about the distance consistency on these.

When playing yesterday had multiple chances to hit a couple balls from the same spot. With a similar swing and strike (similar—not identical, I’m not that good) the ball marks were within 5 feet of each other side-to-side and pretty much exactly the same carry distance.

Also had an instance on a par 3 where I hit 2 balls where one had more of a draw that I wanted, the other a little fade. The balls flew exactly the same distance.

I have a set in BST for anyone interested. Like others said they’re very consistent but I enjoy the blueprints a touch more due to the size of them

Picking these up from the builder today...with an updated shaft (modus just wasn't going to work) I'm excited.

I played a round with these using wrong shaft and lie angle slightly off, and they were really consistent anyway distance wise.   Just left, due to being too upright.  Felt amazing, dare to say better than my S55...

Interested to keep hearing feedback from those who are gaming these.   If all goes well, I'll be hitting this afternoon, playing this weekend, and likely ready for spring tourney play after winter golf season....

Definitely not trying to hijack your thread OP but WOW.  Hoping others chime in as they play these more.

Picked them up today, went for a range session, so far these are great.  Turf interaction is superb, and they feel great.  Divots are even, very blade like...

Distance is very consistent and the ball comes off the face 'strong.' ball flight is very flat, no ballooning, and misfits weren't too punishing.  4i looks intimidating, but absolutely pure....got a bit of fade so far (offset from power spec probably the reason) but flighting, draw, fade, etc...so good...gapping soooo consistent.

After first round we'll see how they hold up, but very happy with the results so far.  And man...they feel so good, better than S55, very little "click" even with range balls, prov1 should really tell the tale.

I only hit mine once outside and one range session. They have pop off the face, good sound, super consistent from what I saw. Distance was spot on what I am looking for. They did. It stuck in any turf and came out clean.  LS shafts are dynamite!  Looking forward to putting them through their paces. Having played the vaunted 55 and the I blade. These are improvements on both except feel which as mentioned is poppy off the face. Ball comes out hot and sometimes does what you want it to do. They knocked 921 tours out as overall they just performs better for me but lack the mizzy feel. They have a unique feel fo their own though.

How was the distance compared to your i500's?

Pretty close.  Noting, same shafts and power spec.  I did that for the ability to blend in 3/4 if needed but I'm liking the 4 i59 for now.

Much appreciated.

Just so we are on the same page the i500's were standard loft and the i59's were power spec?

Thanks again for the insights.

Correct.  They line up nicely loft wise, but the i500 seemed to get a bit more pop being hollow.  So far (it's early yet) distances can't be off much, because I'm hitting similar targets with similar clubs on the range.

Will really know when I get a round in.  I hit alot of the same shots into greens...

I gave them a try.....Back to the s55's.

I still have those too.   Can't get rid of them because a couple bad iron striking rounds make you want to bring em out again.  3-PW and they still look good...

Only negative I've found is the smaller/more grooves are harder to clean....so yeah.

Hard to find anything wrong with these, they just feel and look so great!

Another range sess, another bunch of pins getting knocked over with irons.  Didn't have my best swing today, but still kept it consistent.

Now if I could just get work/kids to stay out of my golf game's way...

Round one done.   Really good.  Had your typical "wtf?" Swings as happen with new irons but hit so many gems.   Great through the wind, distance (power specs) right with my i500.

Seems smooth and steady wins the race vs muscling up.   Hit some lower "muscle up" shots. Vs high soft and spin slightly back full shots.  Knock downs were really solid.  Could really control distance with spin well.

High face...ouch. You don't get away with those.  Right and short, which isn't the worst miss...sometimes.

  • 2 weeks later...

Two more rounds down...hit some monsters out of fairway bunkers, dropped some long irons into greens, fired at some par 3's, tried a Bubba shot around some trees, and pulled most of it off...🤣

The good shots are great, the decent shots aren't bad...I'd say slightly more forgiving than S55, but with a very similar profile.  Can't say if they are as similar as i210, never could play them.  Probably about the same as i500, which let you get away with wandering on the face.  Seems more ball flight punishment with i59 (hook/slice), if you don't hit clean...i500 would not do that as much but you could nuke it if you caught it higher on the face and shut it down...the ol' pull draw...15yds longer.  Never happen with these.

Shot some lovely ball-striking rounds, still have some minor tweaks to make them perfect but so far...sooooo gooood.
