Johnny Miller WITB 1973 US Open

Could someone who has the photos of Johnny Miller's WITB for the 1973 US Open please post them.

I think Johnny may have donated the clubs to the Hall of Fame in Florida.

Driver ... "I had to have everything just right, so I refinished my clubs and refaced them. In '73, they used persimmon that wasn't the hard wood. I wanted the heavier blocks that had a real tight grain. I wanted a little movement, which means [wood] from the knotty area of the tree."

 

😂 ... Priceless. This is what a club ho was in the 70s. Getting to the level where you actually want to pick the specific part of the tree the wood is cut from? This dude would seriously fit in in the WRX Club Techs forum.

The US Open-winning set, pictured, are in the USGA Museum, I believe. The set on display at the World Golf Hall of Fame are a different, likely later, set.

That wedge has a nice modern sort of low bounce grind to it.

   Very.  JM was known as the most accurate and precise iron player in the world at the time.  He would ask his caddie for 1/2 yard increments on distances.

Great post thanks. Interesting about the ball since I switched c the same time to the small Pinnacle ball introduced then. It was still legal for a while around then in the U.K., at 1.66” diameter it may have been or maybe 1.60. I shot down to single figures because I could then take doglegs out with the driver, a cheap cross-cut Riley Persimmon ( cost used £5; 43” playing length ). When we had to use the American ball it was much harder to play in wind, especially in winter, but better for the short game. Retired it when a Penna came long.

Thanks for posting that.  I've always liked Johnny M., even as an announcer.  His yardages then are pretty much my yardages today except my Driver isn't up to par, except for those days when the joints are filling young.

#10 iron for PW has been around for a long time.   Common with Japanese club makers.

MacGregor 10 iron (wedge) were when pitching wedges were actually pitching wedges.  I just bought an old school set of Ping Cat Eye Irons.  Wedge on that set will be I believe 50 degrees.  Will just need a 56 after that.

 

I'm glad I'm from the generation where a PW was not a 9 iron.

Back around 2k I had a set of PRGR tour irons, PW was labeled #10.  A few other companies like Ernie Vadersen original Snake Eyes Wedge Co, made for tour pros, labeled wedges 10, 11 & 12.  Still, today, those were THE best 1018 wedges ever.  I bought 4 sets and still have a few leaning against the wall in my office.

The very traditional pitching wedge was 52*, the 9 iron 48* and the 8 iron 44*.

My pitching wedge today is 46*, a 8 and a half iron in the old days.

That said, as long as you know how far each club goes it doesn't make a difference.

The manufacturers keep saying their irons go further, however the reality is they simply number them wrong.
