Masters Ticket Scalpers

I only trust Stubhub; no need to trust anyone else.  Have bought last minute (usually same-day) practice round tickets from them, picked them up at a house they rent just outside the back entrance; a quick google search reveals the actual address of the house, and looks like it will be the same for 2022:  https://stubhub.community/t5/Major-Events/2022-Masters-Tournament-FAQ/m-p/125206#M914

When the unlimited in/out policy went away 2-3 years ago, Stubhub had to stop reselling tickets once a round started, as there was no way of telling if the 2 in/outs had expired.  You used to be able to purchase well into the day, but I think Stubhub sales have ended at 8am the past couple years because of the new 2 in/out policy.

The second year Bubba won I hung out around the Stubhub house on Saturday until the price was right; bought a SAT badge at noon for $250, well before the leaders went off.  Had to return it to the house shortly after the round, or else Stubhub says they'll charge you several grand for not returning a tournament round badge (paper practice round tickets don't need to be returned).

People can hate Stubhub all they want, but ticket brokers are the only way for most folks to get a ticket.  And if you play it right, you can get tickets at a relatively low price.  The longer you wait, the lower the price.  Don't pay the ridiculous $1k+ prices now for practice rounds...wait.  And if rain is in the forecast, prices will drop significantly the days before.  However, Stubhub inventory was significantly down the past few years (I assume with the limited in/out policy).

I agree regarding the safety of dealing with Stubhub but practice round tickets are now in the $2000 range. Maybe they will be lower in a couple of months. A lot depends on whether or not Tiger plays. I’ve just always been curious about what prices are like from the on site resellers.

Monday low is $1,150 / TUE is $1,450 / WED is $1,800; buy the lowest price, not the highest price 🙂 https://www.stubhub.com/masters-tickets/grouping/7771/

I've never paid more that $350 for a Monday on Stubhub

Here's how I've tracked Stubhub pricing/inventory over time in the past; will update here weekly or so.  Tickets ship late FEB (even though they say early MAR), so there will be a bump in inventory then.  A Tiger announcement would obviously keep prices high.  Luckily I already have my 4 for Monday 😛

But back to on site scalpers; I assume the relatively-new in/out limit has crushed their same-day business (probably the intent), so certainly wouldn't buy a same-day ticket from them now, at least not after gates open.

First time I went, Monday 2002 - 2004ish, buddy and I drove over from ATL first thing MON morning.  He said we wouldn't have any problem finding tickets.  We're there by 8am and no one is selling.  We walk Washington RD for 2-3 hours and we may have seen 2 singles for sale in that time, for $300+.  It's like outside a Nat'l Champ Football game and everyone is looking to buy tickets.  Gets to be about 11am and now we're trying to find those 2 singles.  We're towards I-20 and 2 teenage girls pop out between 2 cars in a fast food parking lot:

"you guys need tickets?"

"Yeah, how much?"

"$150 each"

We go behind the fast food joint, buddy and I quickly scramble to get 15 - $20s together.  To this day we don't know how much we each put in.  We hand the $300 to one of the girls, we'll call her the ring leader.  She counts the cash about 10 times.  Then she hands it to her partner, who also counts it at least 10 times.  Very careful with the money.

"Ok, it's a deal"

Ring leader pulls out a 2-inch stack of Monday tickets.  She hands me 2.  But at the same time, unknown to her, the partner also hands my buddy 2 tickets.  Not so careful with the tickets.

Buddy and I don't even need to make eye-contact, we head east on Washington RD asap without running and tipping them off.  We each put 1 ticket on a belt loop and 1 in a back pocket.  10-15 minutes later we're almost at the old Washington RD entrance, and like a scene from the Matrix, these two girls are now somehow in front of us, blocking our way to the entrance.

"Hey, you guys ripped us off!!"

   -"What are you talking about?"

"We gave you 4 tickets!"

-"There's only 2 of us.  See, we each have a ticket on our belt loop"

"You ripped us off!!"

   -"Go ahead, call the cops"

10 minute standoff ensues.  They finally give up as they have a lot more tickets to sell.  Once they're gone we whip out the extra 2 and sell them instantly for whatever face value was at the time.  We're in by noon for ~$100 each 🙂

🤣 🤣 behind the fast food joint!

All sounds like a very stressful day.

I will stick to using Thomas "Tommy Sneakers" Cacciopoli round the back of Luigi's on Broad Street.

I’ve bought from StubHub, the BST and locals on Washington Rd. Each transaction has been smooth and painless.

StubHub was straight forward. Bought from a reputable member here. The Washington Rd scalpers was surprisingly easy too. Tried to negotiate but they were very aware of the market. Ended up buying from a Tour Bus parked at the Shell Gas Station. These businesses have far too much to lose selling fake tickets or have some deal go poorly, so I felt surprisingly comfortable. Buying from a random single person I may not feel as good about it.

Say what you will about resellers, but without them I wouldn’t have some of my favorite live sports memories.

MON 12/6 Stubhub update: Good news for all 3 practice round days.  MON low dropped $50, and inventory increased, particularly in the low price range.  TUE saw a 12 ticket increase in the low price range.  WED had a $200 drop for 4 tickets to a new low of $1,600, with an overall increase in inventory.

Not much change since last posting.  TUE low has gone up; WED low has dropped.  Once we get into FEB and tickets ship we'll see inventory increase and prices drop.

In person you just have to be careful that they didn't sell several copies of the tickets and whoever gets to the gate first is the one that gets in and the rest got scammed.

It would be a chore to make copies, as they aren't pdf/printout type of tickets, have visible security features, etc.  Lots of risk anyway buying even real tickets in person same day now, as in/out is limited to 2 ins for the past couple of years.

Big jump in TUE inventory, 40, with 25 of those in the lowest price range.  Also a jump of 12 for WED inventory in the lowest range.  Monday low inventory dropped by 5.

Couple of quick questions, I had the opportunity to attend in 2019 when I won Wednesday practice round tickets, but want to attend this year so will have to find another way to buy. For this year, I am considering trying to go Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday (just 1, not all 3!)

1. I am not within driving distance of Augusta so have to fly. Is it too risky to go without a ticket in advance (meaning stubhub, unsure of another advanced resale option)

2. I understand the new issues with the re-entry policy, is there any concern with this if you’re buying from a reseller on Washington first thing in the AM? I assume the risk that the ticket was used already that day is pretty low, but you tell me

3. Do the resellers negotiate? Or does that only happen as the day goes on? Same with Stubhub, are they firm on prices?

4. I recall along Washington, there were more “official” looking resellers, I remember Jimmy D. Is there any reason to trust those guys less? I imagine they’ve been there so many years and their reputation is on the line.

Finally, just a comment, I am not sure when I went in 2019 if they saw my name or if any personal info pops up when I scanned my ticket. If a ticket scan shows your name, and Augusta requires proof of vaccination to attend 2022, then that could essentially kill the resale market if they’re matching vax cards to tickets. I could be wrong, but was thinking about that

  1. I would acquire a ticket BEFORE the day you want to attend.  I think Stubhub stops selling at 8am when gates open, for each day, due to the limited twice-in policy, and assume it's the same this year.  So after 8am you don't know if any ticket sold on the streets has already been in twice and now useless.  I have no experience with the tents selling tickets, but wouldn't buy from any reseller other than Stubhub.  If you trust a tent seller, fine.
  2. Before 8am you'd think a real ticket would still be good...but why risk it?
  3. Don't know, I wouldn't buy from anyone other than Stubhub
  4. Asked and answered 🙂 If anything this year, the tent sellers might raise their price once 8am hits; they're no longer competing with Stubhub at that time.  Why not just watch Stubhub and buy a ticket if/when it gets down to a price point you're willing to pay?

COVID obviously is a big unknown.  But really doubt they put any name-tied-to-ticket policy in place this year, when tickets have already been sold.  If/when that ever goes in place, I'd bet they'd announce it before tickets go on sale.

Agree there won’t be any certificate required for Masters  entry other than those who carry dead presidents.   The best thing to do is buy before you fly.  I’m inside of 2 hours drive if you do below the speed limit   and I would never try to buy from the scalpers.  Too much grey area for me.  My luck is too bad to risk it.
