$1 Top Flight vs $4 Titleist

Assuming neutral swing characteristics, how much distance flight and spin do you think you're giving up?

Let's say Hammer Distance vs Pro-V1 (or any comparable tour ball of your choice).

I think we're giving up 10% distance on the driver (for me that's 220 vs 240 yards), half a club in approach club (carry only, roll evens it out), and 1,000 revs of greenside spin on full wedges.

I think most here will disagree on the driver numbers, but what of the rest?

I hit a Pro V1 and a Nitro the same with my driver. I prefer the Nitro in the event it gets lost.

<edit> Nitro is $.45

I doubt you would give up 10% on average if you give up anything on driver distance and might gain a little in accuracy. Lower spin balls tend to fly further off irons and higher by design. The difference in balls is mostly feel and short game spin. If you normally chip or pitch the ball and it goes past the hole then a urethane ball would probably change that.
Crossfield did a comparison, Wilson Duo Pro, Titleist Velocity and PV1. Out of 9 balls 8 were with a yard or so.😳

Like a squirrel I gather balls during the year and throw a few Nitro's in the bag for that  leaf covered fairway. Not  crazy about losing a $4 ball under a million leaves just to find it in the clubhouse jar for another $2.50 a week later. Grrr....

I tend to lose about 3 balls a round, but often find 1 or 2, so it evens out.

I play on average 3 balls at a time on 9 holes. Never 2 of the same ball. My current rotation:

Bridgestone E6

Pro V1

TP5

Srixon Q Star Tour

Nitro Pulsar

Inesis Soft 500

I hit em all about the same. I keep waiting for an "ah ha!" moment and in a year and 100+ rounds, I'm still waiting. 🤣

<edit> I seem to lose the Bridgestone's the least. Maybe that's my ball?

This is how pathetic my golf life is..... in the upper right hand corner of the scorecard after the rd. I - how many balls lost and + how many found.

On a rainy January night I'll crunch all those numbers from the 100-150 rds the previous year. Example = 2019 I averaged 1.2 lost balls a rd. and found 4.5 balls.

(I walk and scour the brush when waiting on the group ahead usually.)

This came out to +412 balls. 34 dozen of which 3-4 dozen were Pro Vs and give those to my son. I'll hit the premium Bridgestones and TM's, give the Callaway\Srixon  to the local school team plus the Wilson's and Noodles, and keep a dozen or two Nitro\TourMax for leaf time.

That's awesome. I just know how many I've bought (usually batches of 48). The ones I find I've been tossing in a side pocket. If it's something I play, I'll just add it to the mix.

My new stencil should be here soon so I can mark up all my balls.

I gain distance off the driver with Hammer Control or Duo Soft compared to ProV1. I don't swing fast enough to really impart a lot of spin on the short game, so that aspect really doesn't affect me too much. Plus I simply like the feel of a softer, cheaper ball off the putter than firmer urethane balls. I know there's a certain site out there that insists ProV1 should be played by everyone, but it simply doesn't work out for me.

I bought some Pro V1's last month because I was out of stuff to buy and had golf budget left over. My expectations were realistic to start and as figured, I have not noticed a difference.

I will eventually lose them all and won't be buying more.

Just like CBs vs. blades, it's wonderful that there are so many choices.

And just like irons, ANY player can choose ANY ball for whatever reason(s) they want.

It's amazing how many Pro V's we find in the slice/hook zones.  I find a lot of NItros and Noodles just off the greens but not usually in the slice/hook zones.  Why do you think that is?

Can't say I find my Bridgestones in either area.  When I do, it goes in the "play it later" pouch on my bag.  I save the Noodles for those "What the hell?" holes when I try to hit a shot that I know I can't anymore.

Because some high cappers play the best balls they can afford and other high cappers are blind ? :classic_biggrin:

You are thinking about this too hard... Guys pick-up ProV1s and other premium balls that are easy to find. Not the case with Nitro's, Noodles, etc. That's the reason.

Also easier to discard the nitro. If I'm hitting a few balls on a hole for practice (don't get upset anyone, nobody behind me), and the nitro goes too far away from the walk back to the cart, it might get left for someone else. A new or expensive ball? Nope.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
