The 2022 Experiment

Well. One month left in the year and new additions / changes to the bag are imminent, for a lot of people I'm sure. This past year started, for me, with Ping Eye 2s with 2 - W in the bag. Lasted 3 months until I snapped a 6 iron about a foot up from the club head. Re-shafted then sold them. Then I went back to Cobra Forged Tour One Lengths and have them now. I'm a fan but I don't like my gappage.

I haven't been playing much so I'm ditching them for some friendlier Game Improvement sticks. I found a set of Rocketbladez with stock / stiff shafts 85 Gram shafts which I am looking forward to playing. I traditionally play a more compact, less offset head with heavier shaft in all of my irons but, am looking forward to this new change. I've never needed help but, life is getting busier again and welcome the distance assistance with lower lofted irons. So, the big changes for me are as follows:

  •  Lighter shafted irons
  •  Game improvement set of clubs

Anyone planning on making any other switches? I like my bag setup other than what I plan to change.

Cheers

Honestly not the biggest fan of switching stuff out just because it's newer but I have a terrible habit of tinkering so hoping to just find something that I like and stick with it even if I have to force myself to do so. Trying to get a Circle T though which would be an awesome addition

I'm going to be experimenting with a set of ie1s.  I know they're generations old, but I always liked the look of them over i20/i25 and i200/i210.  They're going to be adjusted to mimic my Eye2s for loft/lie/length/grip, so I'll have a direct comparison...

I think the only thing I'll likely change is to a more forgiving driver.  I've been playing a low-spin driver for the past 5 seasons (2016 M1), but I think I'm going to have a look at a Ping driver.  I rarely find the center of the clubface, so I don't think I'll lose any distance, on average.

I think I might add a 4i back into the bag, too.  I was fitted for JPX921 Forged 5-GW this past spring and replaced the 4i slot with a 22 degree hybrid that I just don't get on with.  I'm thinking of adding either a JPX921 HM or HMP 4i in that spot.

My plan is not to make any changes for the next several years. Unless I find a great deal on something new. 😁

The only thing I'm changing is my ball, honestly. Played the Q-Star Tour all this year, and moving up to the Z-Star XV for the coming year.

Can't find a single thing wrong with my clubs. Now my swing...well, that's a completely different story.

The 2021 Callaway experiment is over. I am trading in my Mavrik's with stiff graphite shafts for TMAG Sim 2 Max irons with R steel 85 shafts. Will most likely need to switch out a wedge or two to handle gapping (58 for the 56 SW Jaws MD5) and will test drivers to see if the G400 loses its place in my bag. Always on the hunt for a new putter but like prior years will probably just change out the grip on my Yes Tracy II. Oh, I don't have a hybrid anymore and might want to add a new one. I guess the only safe club is my Tour Edge Exotics 17 3/4 wood with Tensei Blue R shaft.

Knowing me nothing is safe. If I think I can sell something without taking much of a loss, I'll replace it with something (usually from CPO). I want to try a 2-ball putter but I've been putting really well with what I have right now. I won't change something that's working.

The biggest change I might make though is grips. I've been playing midsize for about the last year but I'm thinking of going back to standard with an extra wrap or 2.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

"Full" 10-Club Bag currently looks like this:

My goal is to keep my current bag once I determine the winner between Sim Max with LAGP Tour AXS blue and TSi4 with Ventus Black 6TX.

biggest bummer is for next year with tax changes, it takes the fun out of buying clubs to try and sell to try other stuff. I guess if I take a loss it’s fine but it takes the joy of finding a good sale and trying and if not funding other experiments.

I am quite enjoying ZX7 irons, Vokey wedges, my TSi fairway and my TMB driving iron. I can’t see anything needing to change and I hope I stick to it haha.

my putter has been awesome. Legacy Powell Prototype with LAGP shaft.

I did a lot of tinkering this year and hope to mostly leave things alone next year.

Looking like time for me to replace a couple wedges, then we'll see what the new drivers are but the thread about the '22 TaylorMade has certainly got my interest. Other than that, who knows, still happy with my irons so I'm sure my wife would be happy if I just keep the upgrades to the wedges and maybe driver.

The only thing in my bag that could use replacing is my 56° wedge. I've had it for a couple years and it's the workhorse around the green so it may be replaced. Everything else I'm ok with, might get a new putter and a new driver shaft since I have a fitting with Club Champion. Maybe new irons if the numbers work out (budget and performance)

My 2022 experiment will be to make less than 2 changes.

- I will hit the new TM driver but I love my sim.

- 3w is not settled yet. Putting a ts3 through tests now. If it doesn't work then the stz stays and I may look at stuff that gets released in 2022.

- hybrid is set

- irons are set

- wedges are set

- putter is set

- ball is set

Tightening up an issue in my swing that causes consistency issues. Want handicap to end better than my current +1.5. I peaked at +2 last year and then came back a touch at the end of the season. Would love to see +3 get reached next year.

I am doing something similar.  I was ho’ing when I stumbled onto a unicorn, of sorts…some Wilson Staff Ci7’s in pristine condition.  They have the TX-105 shafts in them.  I don’t know what it is, but I hit freaking lasers with them.  They are consistently long, as in I can routinely hit a 215 yard 4-iron with them.  And they feel amazing.

So I am going to build my bag around them for this season…picking up an extra wedge for the bottom of the bag.  I look forward to seeing what I can do with them.

p.s.  I am experimenting with a broomstick putter…

Hopefully will replace entire bag except putter.  Will be doing a full bag fitting at some point.  Driver/FW/Hybrid will depend on fitting results. For irons, I’m leaning towards Honma, Mizuno, Srixon or PXG.  Wedges have always been Cleveland, so don’t envision changing.

will replace entire bag except putter. i have a idea, i suck at using FW and my driver skills are great some weeks and utterly terrible many weeks. so my idea is to figure out what I’m doing wrong and how i can get a more consistent swing with the longer clubs

so i bought a driver, 3 wood and a 5 wood epic flash to kind of force me in to practicing with them...

i changed my cobra combo sett for a Callaway MB + apex pro combo sett. i have had some problems with my elbows and hands and I’m wondering if its connected to vibrations so in the new irons i have MMT 105tx

i had sm8 wedges sold them and I’m now looking for something to fill that spot.....
