Top Golf Nov 28 getting started

Learning to play the game all over again — back story is here:

The top golf session yesterday…..ouch, I have a lot 😡 of work to do.
- Rebuild leg strength (particularly on R leg) and improve balance

- Build R hand grip strength

- Build R forearm strength

- Re-learn the feeling of slotting the club — using R arm only

Unusual ask, but would welcome any feedback, and I will keep this thread updated as I build strength, balance, flexibility this winter. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Adaptive Golf.....look out for the one-armed man:

  PXG 0211 hybrids, 25*, 28*, 31*….+2”

  PXG 0211 8i - SW….+3” or Sub70 699 8i - SW….+4”

Thanks. All kinds of problems there. I did post the single worst strike in a 90 minute session 🙂

Keep the input coming. I probably need a half dozen focused real range sessions before I should post up a video but wanted to get everyone in on the ground floor.

You’re close. That is 100% a golfer swinging the club, and you still have speed! The action is there you just need a little cleanup and more reps. I would look for an instructor that can understand and work with the changes to your body from the accident.

Looking at you strength list, I’m thinking farmer carry. Just pick up something with your right hand and walk a short distance. Vary your grip and weight to keep it interesting

Hell u hit the ball better one handed than 1/2 the golfers I see from the starters box lol. IMO it will be all about balance and tempo, not strength.

I have lost the feel of shallowing the club!

Understandable I suppose, since I haven’t played since October 2018.

I will get it back. Starting with 50 half swings in my yard each afternoon. Aim to start regular range sessions this week. My L hip is stiff/sore but am looking to work through that — hoping that’s not permanent as there is a LOT of metal in there holding it together.

Thanks -- there will be lots of experimenting.  I've tried going to the other side of the ball to use my lead arm with a lefty club, but I think that's too much of an adjustment.

I have not found stories of anyone making a similar journey, but haven't looked very hard either.  I am going to visit Ping for a full adaptive fitting, but I'd like to build some strength first.

Pre-accident clubs are definitely a terrible fit for a one-arm swing, so despite the video (Top Golf for my son's birthday) I'm focusing on pitches and a 9-to-3 action this winter.

Here is an article about an adaptive golf instructor.

Well, my iPad won’t paste the link for some reason.  Please Google adaptive golf is on the rise, and look for the result at golf.com.

Update:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/9jLZgNMGkA4PCBHE9

Hit a medium bucket of PWs today and feeling encouraged. Observations:

1. I need to fix my setup to give myself more room. This looks cramped, too close to the ball and not enough bend at the waist or flex in knees.

2. Results were good - these were PW flying about 80 yards, but I need to work hard on feeling the club slot. This is very close to OTT and I don’t like that at all.

3. Grip pressure — really easy to strangle it with one arm. No good!

4. Fitting will be important. My Vokey 54 felt like a 25 pound sledge. This old ISI PW was better but I bet I’ll be fixed up with both light actual weight and light swing weight.

Not a lot to show….the weather has been so terrible here in western PA that even the heated range is too cold for me.

Been hitting the Pilates machine hard to build leg strength back. Also working on lateral leg strength exercises and lots of R forearm and grip strength work. Should all be helpful — really counting on my legs to respond so I can avoid the hooky heel strike.

Heading to Phoenix next month for a Ping full-bag adaptive fitting. Really excited for that trip!

You have a strong positive attitude , so it is highly probable that you will enjoy golf in the future.

One suggestion for increasing hand strength. Buy one of those portable pullup bars and hang from it . That is one of the exercises that my daughters rock climbing fiancé does to increase hand and finger strength

Not the best angle, but I’ve been working.

Index down to 20, feeling good and having fun!

This driver was struck about as well as I can do.  Hard to tell carry and total distance at this driving range, but on course a good drive for me rolls out to 230-235. I don’t know the carry yet.

Better angle here. This is a 7i. Contact I’m happy with. Swing is getting long….fought that for a long time before I got injured and don’t want to go down that road again!

Two 7i swings in the rain

Figured it was time to post up a driver swing on the course.  Hit this one OK -- little bit of a toe miss but not too bad.
