Anyone using a Senior/Amateur shaft (gasp!) on any of your clubs?

I know this is WRX, but anyone (willing to admit) they use senior/amateur flex shafts on any of their clubs?

If yes, what club(s)? Long iron, random fairway wood, driver, hybrid?

How did you end up with it - tempo, shot shape, injury, just works for you?

I use A flex on all my clubs. I'm 72, why wouldn't I? I started using light weight R shafts when I was a spry 40, they worked better for me than heavier stiffer shafts even though I still had a 110 swing speed. I started using A flex ten years ago. IME if you don't need a S or X flex you shouldn't use them, and if you don't have a high swing speed you don't need S or X.

A while back I let a guy half my age try my driver, because he wanted to see how my JumboMax grip felt. He's a long hitter, 275 on average, but he tends to over fade, verging on slice. He has a Callaway with an S shaft. The first swing with my driver and A flex shaft he hit a towering draw that went 300.

I am 78 and I use the Ping Distanza Senior shaft in my driver.  I have been looking out for some steel senior iron shafts to use in my irons.

You should look into the Nippon NS Pro Zelos.

My wife uses R2/A flex. That's not a backhanded comment, either - she's a frequent player and in the club leagues.

We fit her into that flex earlier this year as she's progressed on from the 'L' flex shafts provided with clubs so I've had lots of experience in that flex range recently.

Unfortunately as I got more into it I realized it's a really underserved portion of the market.

I have an old set of taylormades that i take to a range with crappy balls and one day my 7 iron head flew off. I just found the cheapest somewhat decent 7 iron on ebay since it was cheaper than reshafting. Callaway apex cf19 with catalyst 50 senior flex. I have had no problem hitting it, though balls sometimes sail pretty high. So a truely random club.

You don't have to be an AARP member to have a swing speed less than 100 MPH.

I did not mean my additional question with any disrespect. It just makes sense that seniors are using senior flex shafts, so my question was more about the uncommon application of them.

I ask because I happened upon a driver that instantly fixed my fade/slice and absolutely striped it.

How is it launching like this? Why does it feel so whippy? What’s this head? What’s this shaft?

DO I DARE USE AN “A” FLEX SHAFT?

I've hit senior flex irons and they all go left. It seems the club releases more, closing the face faster.

I have A-flex in my slightly used Osize 4H. It was about two grams lighter shaft than the R-flex, and no R flexes were available except at premium price. So, I got the A-flex.

It works well, although sometimes I think I might tip it a half-inch just to stabilize it. I have already put strips of lead tape in the two sole slots under the toe. This has helped prevent hooks.

My new Max irons have the Catalyst 65 shafts - 5.5 - that trim out to about 70 grams. So I have very light R-flex in my irons.

I sense there's some dynamic tension between shaft weight and flex.

I've recently switched most of my shafts over to much softer profiles.  I'm a 47yo male with a 95-100mph driver swing speed.

I've always fought a bit of a fade/slice with the longer clubs, and just happened upon a Callaway ladies Mavrik Max 5-wood with the stock Helium 5L ladies shaft.  Gave it the waggle test, and yep, it felt soft.  First time hitting it I was hitting nice smooth high shots with a very slight draw.  I never hit draws before.

So I decided to build myself a ladies shaft for my Callaway Big Bertha APW head that previously had a stiff flex Aldila Green in it.  The change was hugely noticeable.  I had the head turned up to 10* before to get a reasonable amount of launch, and I was generally playing down the right side of the fairway all the time, with about 25% misses to the right too.

After I built the ladies flex shaft using the Aldila NV Pink, ball flight was much higher, and much straighter with a bit of a draw tendency.  I was able to turn the head down to 8* and get about the same launch angle as before.  I've picked up about 11yards according to the arccos data, and I'm playing out of the center of the fairway now.

I've since picked up a few more ladies Mavrik woods since I enjoyed that 5w so much, with the higher lofted versions actually having the softest Helium 4L shaft.  I'm very much enjoying the high launching and slight draw bias show shape I've been getting.  One thing to ask yourself, is how often are you really trying to "smash" a 9 wood or 4/5 hybrid or a 8-iron?  Versus just trying to put a nice controlled swing on it to get hit a desired number.

I'm still playing the stock "R" graphite shafts that came in my Ping irons.  Not sure if I'm going to reshaft those, or just consider L or A flex shafts with the next irons I buy.

I do have a fairly smooth tempo, so perhaps it is working better for me than it would others.

Isn’t a general rule that if you shorten a shaft, you make it stiffer?

Does anyone know how much of a difference an inch makes? I’m guessing it doesn’t change a regular into a stiff, but is it barely noticeable or significant enough where it feels like it’s in between regular and stiff?

If you shorten a shaft with a butt trim, it technically makes it stiffer but not enough to be noticed to touch. If you tip trim a shaft, this will more dramatically increase stiffness, as you're trimming off the flexible tip.

For me, a half-inch might firm it up a bit, but not much. How much does an inch matter? It varies shaft by shaft, and that's why I always talk to my clubsmith and pro Doug on shafting.

For stock shaft, the 2016 BB Osize has...

UST Mamiya Recoil ES 460 Graphite

Flex Shaft Weight Torque Kickpoint
Light (F2)  64 Mid Low
Regular (F3)  65 Mid Low
Stiff (F4)  68 Mid Low

As you can see, the F2 flex is only a gram lighter than the F3. The weight is negligible, and the flex difference feel is hard to tell. Basically, the F2 vs. F3 was price. Although Osize was out of production, I could get use F2 used, while F3 was still selling for full price (F2 ~ $60 less).

In other hybrids, the shaft weight/flex difference is greater. For example, the Epic Super Hybrid shaft.

AEROTECH STEELFIBER FC HYB GRAPHITE / Light = 60 grams / Regular, Stiff = 70 grams.

So if you’re between regular and stiff and you want to get a shaft shortened, you should go with the regular correct? Or risk making the shaft too stiff?

Depends on where you trim. Tip trimming will affect the flex more because you're shortening the more flexible tip portion of the shaft.

Butt-trimming will affect flex somewhat, but if you cut a half inch you would probably need a computerized deflection machine to detect the difference. (You couldn't feel the flex change.)  If you butt-trim a shaft that already installed in the club, you will feel the change in SwingWeight much more than flex change.

(Rule of thumb is that butt-trimming a shaft a half inch will lower the SwWt 3 points.)

I didn't think the question was disrespectful. It would be better to ignore the classification 'senior flex', and for that matter all of the currently used classifications. The primary consideration for flex should be swing speed, not the age or sex of the golfer, so that's how they should be rated.
