Horrid Deal - Scotty Showcase Partner price gouging

EddyVN

Recommended Posts

Put my name down ages ago for the Champions Choice release from a local public course shop in my area (Denver) listed as a Scotty Partner and Titleist premium partner. This was 3 weeks pre sale and about 10 minutes after the press release. Chases up and never heard anything back

happens to share a name with a place outside SF

Anyways, today I get an email saying they have stock first come first served of some T22s, Champions Choice, and  Triple Black model Scotty’s - email for price and sales start Dec 1 at 0830

I email, I guess stupidly expecting an actual authorized retailer is going to sell at retail

nope

$950 + Tax for the T22

$1200 + Tax for the Triple Black

i know stealers (sorry, dealers) are price gouging cars now but this is some epic bull if the only local spot listed on Scotty’s own site is holding back stock to gauge it later themselves

Man, that's lame and disappointing.

I know accounts can't under price the MSRP but I guess it doesn't violate their account terms to over price.

I own two nice Scottys, just OTR versions, but I am over the SC mystique and mania.  But too each his own, plenty of rabid fans out there willing to pay up.

Yah MSRP dictates the lowest price

they can charge whatever they want over that

seems to be happening more and more

look at second swing

I had the same thing with the triple blacks. Their buyer was like I’m gonna hook you up and did all this calling. Was able to hook me up for $1299 plus tax. I kept telling the guy it was $749 and he was like oh that’s just the price. I contacted titleist and Roger Dunn and titleist said they are only contracted to sell it above the MSRP…however much is their choice.

so it prob doesn’t make a difference but I won’t shop Roger Dunn because of that.

kind of turns me off to retail golf in general

Our release days are a disaster, we don't give a fu9K what people sell our putters for, our limited putters are bought by bots, yet for some reason, all you idiots keep supporting us. Anyway, we don't care. Thanks for being a customer.

I'm not defending that practice by any means but I understand it.  And you can thank the flippers for that.  If what they are asking is what the market will bear (regardless of MAP) and what a flipper might expect to get - then from the retailer's perspective I can see why they would do it.  Even if I think the practice sucks.  Which I do.

I'm not saying you're a flipper but if the limited releases are in such demand that a large percentage of those sold at MAP end up getting flipped immediately for substantial profit I can see from the retailers point of view that if there's that kind of margin to be had then I want to be the one that gets it.

Although I think it's scummy for retailers to do this, I do sort of agree with this statement.

Retailers aren't the ones taking the initiative to mark up items well over the MSRP. They start doing it later on after they realize a secondary market has developed and people are willing to pay well over the standard price for something.

If you want to point an angry finger at someone... Point it towards the flippers (plenty of them on WRX) buying these clubs at MSRP and then reselling them for a >50% profit. Then again I can't blame them completely for doing so. If some idiot is willing to pay that much more than what something is worth then why not take advantage of it. So I guess a lot the blame goes to the people willing to pay what the flippers are asking.

This is 100% market economies at work. Lots of people want something but that something isn't readily available which makes it more desirable. The increased buzz and desirability is reflected by the increased pricing, which most retailers do so only after a little research to see that the secondary market is and has been doing so. Nobody gets mad when a green grass account has to take a bath on old stock of hard or soft goods. Margins in hard goods have been thin for some time and now most companies are trying to kill those same accts by going DTC. FFS, there's only usually a couple to few thousand of these "LIMITED" putters so either put up or....

yeah I understand that but Walmart isn’t charging more for Xboxes or PlayStations. They’re charging retail. It would be similarly disappointing if Walmart/bestbuy/etc was charging $1500 ($499 retail) for any Xbox/PS5.

SC should just go direct to consumer or have an app similar to the SNKRS app

comparing a small, green grass or local shop to a global corporation like Walmart is just silly.

Wal Mart started like every other small business and didn’t get where it is by taking advantage of customers. Instead of taking 30% mark up on a putter, we are going to take 300% is not a good way to take care of good and loyal customers.

Because Walmart operates on small mark ups and slim margins.

Correct. They got where they are by taking advantage of their employees instead 🤣.

Yeah, I wouldn’t  call $15 per hour stocking shelves quite taking advantage. Last I knew, applying for a job with a company was optional.  If your goal in life is to work retail with zero additional education, Wal mart is a great employer. Know many managers with zero college education making over 200k per year. Wal mart really makes their money beating up suppliers and vendors.

it is interesting when gas and oil companies do this, they are hammered but it is just the market. Dont think golf companies should get a pass either. I fully believe that it is 100% their right to raise the price, but to gouge intentionally because flippers can is kind of a lousy excuse. As tough as it is competing with internet vendors, you think green grass stores would be a little more customer friendly.

That is stupidity IMO.  Kind of like my realtor telling us that I may need to pay 10K more for than a 150K house is really worth if I want to get it.  Sorry NOT going to happen I may WANT that house ,but I don't NEED it!!!

You continue to illustrate exactly how this is supposed to work. These are luxury items and should be treated as such.

You perceive them as a "luxury" item.  On what basis.  If you can't putt these will not help.  and if you can then ...the same is true!.  The clubs bought to golf are for that...to Play better.  If you have to buy a luxury item to show off then you are out there for the wrong reason. How many clubs that can help or lessons could one get for this 1250 bucks spent for something that does not help one play better.
