1" extension on driver shaft

New_Guy

Recommended Posts

1" extension will snap under the handle with proper speed, I have experience of this, has happened to me 2 times. It's not nice when you drive an hour to a course and have it snap on the 1st tee. My club builder recommends maximum of 0,5". Best option is to buy a new shaft in raw length and just trim it to the longer length.

Will 1" extension on a ventus black change profile noticeable amount?

That depends on what type of extension you use, the options out there are far from the same, and goes from rigid aluminium, to "chewing gum plastic".

But why do you want it 1 inch longer, and from what length to what length?

If done properly it should be unnoticeable.

I just put an ebay purchased extension in a driver shaft 1" and it was bending significantly under my left hand. (RH'd) My recommendation is buy something that is strong. I saw someone had a 3D printed once that came in 2 pieces and can be printed to exact ID of shaft end. That might be the way to go with some solid plastic, not hollow thin garbage.

@Valtiel good suggestion. I don't know why I've never tried that method before.

I've cut stepped steel shafts to use as extensions before but never used any of the old graphite shafts before.

No change, except if you used to hit the sweet spot often, you might miss the sweet spot a lot more.

Quite awhile back I extended 45" driver 1" to 46", missed the sweet spot regularly, but when I smacked it sweet, it was 12-15yds longer.  But misses were too frequent, so I went back to 44.75" and kiss the sweet spot most of the time.

Have used the universal graphite extenders from GolfWorks for years.  Use sandpaper to size it for the diameter of the shaft I am working on.  I am always a little leery of using epoxy on the insert on my own shafts.  This is due to I might change it later.  Then will use tape if needed on the extension part to build it up to the diameter of the shaft.  I have never had an extension fail that I have done.  But did have 2 fail that were already extended when I purchased them.  I admit I do not know the actual "proper" way to do this....so club-builders feel free to correct me.

About 4 years ago I did one right at the 2" maximum for my neighbor.  He is 6'5" & around 245-250.  This one I did use epoxy on since it was at the maximum length to start with.  Think Harold is on the 2nd driver head since that one, but still using the same shaft.  Figure I have to be doing something right.

When I was the club tech at the local GG, I used the Golf Works color coded extensions. They rarely needed to be sanded, as there were several different sizes. I even had a gauge to show the exact size needed for a particular shaft.

Same ones I use and they are NOT going to break, etc.  Perfectly fine for a driver or any other club.

Get a new club builder.

The builder I have is the best in the county with about 20+ years worth of experience. He didn't do the longer extensions that snapped, he did the one that didn't snap.

I guess you guys don't play golf in the 35° F in the winter like happens in my county that puts a real strain on gear.

Might need to move then, or at least be willing to leave the county to find a competent club builder. I live in Connecticut and have extended drivers over 1" before and hit them in the dead of winter and based on the shafts you play vs the shafts I play I'm guessing I put a little more strain on them than you do.

Would slightly cold temps affect a piece of plastic?

For some plastics yes it's possible - although it would also usually mean that it wasn't really all that strong at any temperature and would bend more in warmer temperatures - which a good quality (or really well designed) extension shouldn't do either.

In these days of made in china stuff - yes it could.

There are also several kinds of extensions and some better than others.

It's only 35º; I doubt that would affect even the cheapest extension.

For most probably not but for some plastics, the strength can be reduced significantly going from 70* F to 35* (from an engineering perspective ~10% or more).   So it's plausible that a poorly designed extension could be pushed over the edge - even more so if the installation was done poorly on top of that reduction.

A cheap plastic extension that might bend in warm weather, might break in cold weather. Either way, it's a bad extension.

As a resident in NE Canada O have played regularly each year in temps like that with up to a 1.5" extension with no issues at all. A properly installed extension should not break regardless of temperature. I wouldn't go back to the guys who did the ones that broke.

Yeah I did go back to the guy that made it, he made it 2 more times and it kept breaking. That's when I had enough so I when I went to my normal builder that built an extension that lasted, he preferred to max out at 1,5 cm. I have to ask that if "cheap plastic" is to blame here, what high grade materials is your extension made out of?

Just remember, this started with you coming in here and posting that " 1" extension will snap under the handle with proper speed, I have experience of this, has happened to me 2 times"  when it's not the speed but rather faulty club making that is the issue.

Use part of an old shaft to make an extension. A lot less likely to break than those cheap plastic ones most people use that don't match the inner diameter of the shaft you're trying to extend well causing a weak point.
