I agree with the fact that all need a balance or ability of steep and shallow.  Different shots, require different things.  I'll have to check out that James Siekman book sometime.  Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Phil.  I don't watch enough video of Phil to accurately comment on what he does most often.  But I think steep and amount of shaft lean, would again depend on the shot type he's trying to hit.  His example in the OP video to hit it higher, has minimal shaft lean due to his ball position.  

 

Also love all of Padraig's videos.  Very cool to get his insight.

Check out his whole series.  He speaks my language I guess.  He just has a great manner about him that somehow makes what he’s meaning come through.  He’s a regular guy I guess is the gist.  None of this trying to talk over your head then explain the point.   He just makes a plain point each time.

One thing to remember with Phil's style, he has been doing this since he was a kid.  Back in the 70's when I was a kid, early on I found an old Ram fastback sand wedge that someone tried to wrap around a tree.  Had a friend's dad put a new shaft in it.  Swear that club had like 80% of the mass at the sole.  I learned early on about all the crazy things you would do with it by playing around with ball position and face angle.

 

The guys I play with always pick on me when I am upset about what was a bad chip for me.  Always get a good laugh out of it...then have to whine about what I wanted it to do & how I didn't hit it the way I wanted...just to feed more fuel to them.  Just have to experiment & screw around to find what works for you.  Needless to say, my chipping is not a weak part of my game.

Chipping was one of my weakest skills and is now a strength.

 

Sure, I could hit some flops that might wow you, but was terribly inconsistent on easier chips.  Now, I use the lower trajectory, back foot, hinge and hold with a 56° 90% of the time. I really can't express how much it's improved my game. 

 Hinge and hold is how I learned years ago. Same here, use the SW a lot, 50* GW works good too for longer chips with good amount of green. Works for all pitch shots too, just maintain that triangle of arms and chest.
