nah, I'd like to give the players the benefit of the doubt.  I guess however many signs they posted weren't that helpful.  You too must think they are "stupid".  Stenson's words, not mine.  And according to him, there was nothing on the tee box.  that is stupid of the organizers.

When asked if it was an easy mistake to make, Stenson took offense.

“I’m a little offended by that because then you think I’m really stupid,” he said.

Added Stenson: “A little note on the tee box would have been helpful, and I will make sure I tee it up on the right tee box in the future because I don’t think I’ve ever done this before. Hopefully, you haven’t either.

Yeah, I would give them the benefit of the doubt. The back 9th tee box is quite far from the back 17th tee box. Under normal conditions, they would never use the back 9th tee box for 17 or vice versa.  Spieth also said that you walk around the backside of 8, so that may have to do with it as well.  The signs may not of been visible with the angle they were walking toward the tee box.  On top of that, the signs are quite tall, so the bills of their caps could be blocking the view of the signs unless you make it a point to look up, but when you are walking, you usually are looking down. That is my mythbusters account of it. 😂

Honestly, it is staggering that Jordan, Stenson and their caddies all missed this.

Given their position in the tournament having played poorly for 3.5 days, am I the only one thinking that they had completely checked out by the time that walked off the 8th green?

What was the potential penalty on the 18th for Hovland?  I turned it on just in time to see him win, and they were talking about how it was decided that it wasn't a penalty.

It's simple. He never watched the video that showed this. Typical of many here.

I think they both realized Saturday that they were gonna end up fighting for DFL and got absolutely s#!thouse hammered.

His ball was just off the putting green, yet he brushed sand away and picked up a small pebble, all on the putting surface (allowed), but video was reviewed to see if he did any of this off the putting surface (not allowed), it was decided he didn't do anything off the putting surface

For my understanding,

- if sand/pebble are on the putting surface, then player can remove them.
- if sand/pebble is off the putting surface, player cannot remove them.

is above correct?

I could see Stenson doing that, Jordan not so much…as a new father, getting some sleep might have been higher on the agenda 😂

I think it also depends on where your ball is.  If your ball is on the putting surface, then I think it's okay to remove sand/pebble that is off the putting surface, but don't know for sure.

I'm glad Hovland did not get penalized, but I'm kinda confused what exactly is going on from ruling perspective.

As you know, I can be exceedingly stupid at times, but I have never, ever unintentionally teed off from the wrong tee.

I think it's time the PGA Tour help out these young men by painting colored lines on the turf for players to follow, all the way up to, and on, the the next tee box. Hey, they're playing for a lot of money, so being aware of surroundings might be a little too much to ask.

Or maybe the tournament assigns a 10 year-old kid to follow each group around and point at the tee signs?

"Hey mister! It's over here!"

Or the players could hire professional "tee spotters" who follow them around to tournaments to spot the tee boxes. It's just another $100K plus expenses for the spotter. That's peanuts now.

Just trying to be helpful. Let's not blame the players and caddies for this. It's a new world.

I’d have missed this easy.  I am creature of habit.  If you’re going to change it. Put it on the tee sheet.  Spieth said it was not in the presser. Maybe it was ?  I don’t have a copy.

Just set up GPS on the their phone to find the tees. But yeah its getting bad out there.

Typically in tournament golf they don’t announce that a certain tee box has been moved up

Now they will tell you before the week that certain tee boxes will be used on the same hole. This usually takes place on par 3s, a par 4 that is drivable so will use more than 1 box to put the players at a decision on how to play that particular hole. This will also take place on par 5s with where the wind will be on a given day

In this instance I would had assumed that the sponsor boarding would be there on the tee. They typically move the board up if the tee is moved up.

Given that they played it every day from the same box and all of a sudden play it a box up with what looks like no sponsor boards behind either tee is down to a lack of awareness on the players part.

yes, they were notified but they didn't make it abundantly clear enough.  that's where I take exception.  like Stenson said, a note on the tee's that said this is the tee box for hole #9 would have been sufficient.  you think they'd have tee'd off any way if they saw something on the tee box?  give me a break.

Should they have had someone hold their hands and lead them to the proper box? You said they were notified. They’re professionals. It’s their own fault.

I don't know how this works, but the tee they played of was still in use, just for a different hole and only on Sunday.  So wouldn't the sponsor boards still be up on it?  Would they have moved the sponsor boards from the now unused 17th tees?

This seems a dumb thing to do by the Tour.  Setting up the course so the guys walk up to the same tee 4 days in a row and on the 5th it's in use, but for a different hole?

I'm guessing that Spieth and Stenson have never seen that before, and between them they've played a LOT of golf and at the very highest level.  And that's why they missed it, they were following the path to the 9th tee and when they got there it looked to be active so they teed it up and hit.  If there was nothing there, then they'd look to see which tee was in play on that hole on that round.

Looking at the picture above with the yellow circles it seemed that they didn’t move the boards for the 9th hole. So the boards were likely still on the back of the tee box. This is assuming that there were boards on the tee box to begin with but 99.9% of the time they’re up so that the camera can pick them up

Ive never heard of a scenario like this happening before.
