Mavrik Max vs. Mavrik Fairway Wood

Recommended Posts

Looking into these as I struggle over fading the ball at times with my 3 wood... what're your thoughts on this model? too big? stock shaft too light? Curious to hear experiences with it

edit: looking at both of these models but want to know peoples opinions

I found the Mav Max to be good at keeping me from fading.  Face is shut, and it does kind of make my left miss more... left.  Super easy to hit, but I couldnt get much distance from it.  That was possibly a shaft or a "me" issue, but I gave up on it for the standard Mavrik.  If you over fade, this could be a good stick for you, plus they're dirt cheap right now.

It’s not a you thing.
I tried them, and same exact thing. They went straight, but no distance. If I could’ve gotten 10-15 yards more I would’ve gladly kept them.

I was getting 4 hybrid distance from the 15* though.

Makes me feel better to hear.  I went with the 13° hoping to find an easy to hit head that I could hit low ropes with, but couldn't really dial it in.

how do you like the standard? what shaft do you have to?

The Max had the 70g Aldila White.  Felt good, looked good.  I actually really like it in a driver more than a fw.

I think the standard Mavrik will be in the bag for a while.  I paired it with a Fujikura Ventus, and it's long, easy enough to hit but in general I'm a decent fairway wood player and hit it often.  Plays pretty neutral IMO.  Very big fan.

Edit:  I top out at about 105mph with driver.  No clue on the lack of distance with the Max.  I've hit some bombs with it, but on average I get like 210-230 yards?  It didn't work out.  Standard Mav, I can usually carry 220 or so.

I love my Mavrik Max woods, but the draw bias is a bit too much for me at times.  Big footprint but stupid easy to launch, even off the deck.  I have a 3+ I hit just as well off the fairway was I do my STZ 3w.

I have the Mavrik Max 3 wood (15 degree model) and love it. The pulled back and low profile really fits my eye, and I find it easy to hit from the deck or tee.

I did find that I was hitting the ball a mile in the air with the stock setup, especially when teed up in my normal fairway wood height, and I didn't like the stock length (43.25", I think?). I was never on a launch monitor with it, but I imagine I was getting some very high spin numbers. I swapped the stock shaft for the Evenflow Black 75g, and now have it playing at 42.25" I believe. To get some of the SW back, I put a heavier weight in the heel weight spot. I think default setup is 14g in the back weight and 2g in the heel. I changed the 2g for a 7g. I can't even remember where I got the extra weight, but I am a big fan of this setup.

@JNewsted  @john myrbch  curious what both of your swing speeds are? Why do you think there was a lack of distance?

I’m 67 and SS with the 3 wood was 83ish on two different days when searching for a replacement. I have no idea why it was playing 20 yards short of the one I have now. It had a big head, looked great at setup. It was forgiving (to me that means easy to elevate) and went straight way more often than most.
Like I said, I wanted to  make it work.

Im nowhere near as accurate with the epic speed, but distance is back. I struggle with 15* off the deck though, and always have, so take that into account here.

I have the Mavrik 5 wood and 7 wood. Both with Evenflow Riptide shafts, 60g. I love them. No hybrids for me, these clubs are fantastic.

We’re talking about the Maverik max though. Completely different animal.

My wife loves her Mav Max woods. Plays the 5 and 7. The 5w converted her from her old JPX900 3w and the Mav Max 7w replaced her hybrid. She wont take the 7w out of the bag now "even though there's a really nice hybrid headcover she saw" which is a really big deal.

I have the Max and distance was what I expected.  The 3, 5, 7 fly just as far as comparable clubs and they're consistent.  Feel is decent and the sound is pleasant.  I don't think the size is too large either.  Overall, I'm happier with these than I was with my prior woods (G400 and Steelhead XR).
