Maltby Driver

I was cleaning out my garden shed when I ran into a bag of old clubs.  I found a Maltby Driver that I stained, finished and put together I am guessing about 40 years ago.  It think that I used a water based urethane based based on how the club feels and looks.  The shaft is bit pitted but overall the whipping and head all seem to have held up pretty well.  I did kind of an ugly job on the back screw installation.  I believe that shaft is probably a TT Dynamic S flex, the swing weight is D2 and the length is 43.75" .  I hit the driver on my skytrak and I was able to get a few out there over 200 yards.  I hit it about as far as hit my 3 hybrid.  The club feels really good though and shots seemed to go very straight.  I did tend to launch it a little low but the spin on the few that I managed to get up in the air was pretty good.  Back in the day I did hit a few 300 yard drives with it!  LOL of course those were nailed on the screws at the old Riverside golf course with a howling tail wind and brick hard fairways, 100 plus yards of roll out...  Custom Built Custom Fit!

I am definitely going to take this old guy out to the course to hit a few shots!  Heck I might play a round or two with it!

Yes I believe that it was considered a deep face driver.  Here is a look at it compared to my current Maltby driver:

 

A bit of a family resemblance I think.

I realize this thread might be a wee bit old, well....7 months anyway. But had to ask - so the "Custon Built Custom Fit" club is a Maltby club? I've seen that on some drivers (brain kinda fuzzy, cuz I think I've seen it on irons, tho maybe not...it was over a decade ago)....

Yes, Maltby wood and iron heads had weight ports that were covered with the "Custom Built Custom Fit" medallions.    I built a set of Maltby irons back in the early 80s and unfortunately I broke most of them over the years bending them for various experiments but I still have an iron head left though it does not have the proper medallion in it:

I wish that I still had some of those the old catalogues that I ordered stuff from, I spent a lot of time looking through them and thinking about building different sets of clubs.  Basically it was Golf Works, Golfsmith and Dynacraft for a number of years.  Iron heads were maybe six or seven dollars each something like that...   LOL the good old days!

hmmm....6 months later, consolidation my shafts that were in storage -  I come across a box of Custom Built Custom Fit iron heads - 2 thru 9 and 10wedge & 11wedge. Wondering what shafts might be appropriate - steel vs graphite

Plus a becu wedge head...

still haven't found any of the woods yet.

Nice!  Which iron head are they?  Same as mine or one of the more forgiving models?

same as yours...wonder what year they're from. You'd think that Maltby's guide would mention the clubs they make, but nope. OOPS, there is a GolfWorks section...looks like it might be their model RMHC made from 1981 thr 1986, forged carbon steel, chrome either bright shine or satin. Just checked mine, seems more satin.

I get the "RM" might stand for Roger Maltby, wonder if the "HC" is High Carbon?

yes...didn't know there was a Roger Maltby on tour. Just checked, the PGA tour player was Rober Maltbie...seems he last played around the mid-2000s
