Help me label my tempo?

Recommended Posts

I am trying to figure out which shafts I would be best suited with. I have a driver swing speed of 105-110. I carry my 7 iron around 180 and I do not have any trouble getting the ball in the air as I'm usually a pretty decent ball striker and hold greens with pretty decent spin. I have a few options on shafts and I'm trying to decide which would be better. I would like to keep my ball from ballooning in the wind as I sometimes spin it a bit too much into a stiff breeze. From what I've read and seen, I feel like I have a deliberate or slower tempo? I'm posting some swing in hopes of getting some more opinions and what shafts I should look at. I placed an order for some ZX7s with some X100 but they are going to be unavailable for a month or two at least and I'm not sure it's worth waiting for those. (I have not been fitted and can't at the moment.)

The shaft options at the moment are:

Project X 6.5, Project X LZ 6.5 or going stiff flex with Project X 6.0, KBS Tour Stiff (120g), KBS Tour $-Taper stiff, Nippon Modus 120 stiff

Looks damn near the same as mine. After fiddling around with different shaft options over a couple years (this includes the KBS Tour and Nippon 120s ... also Oban 125s. Tried some lighter ones too), wound up just going back to the S400s I'd been playing forever.

YMMV.

Project X 6.0 plays more like a stiff+ (had them in irons for a long time, but I have a quick transition and they worked pretty good for me for a long time), and from what I've heard from many people on this site, the Modus 120 plays pretty soft to flex.  So much so that a lot of stiff-flex iron players seem to have gone to Modus 120X.  Can't speak to the rest, but be wary of just ordering some of those shafts without ever hitting them.

It looks like you're arms are hyperextended. Have someone use an alignment stick or club to make sure your elbows and shoulders are parallel to your target/feet line. You'll probably have to relax the right arm quite a bit. Do you miss greens mostly left? You have a bit of sway with excessive leg drive, but I think it's a compensation due to open shoulders to get it started on line. (The brain is smart). You have a good swing, just need to clean up the setup.

I appreciate the advice! my usual miss on irons is to miss a bit left, yea. my hands sometimes feel like they get a bit too active and I've just always kind of thought that was the reason. The sway honestly was something I've been tinkering with because I felt like it helped my weight transfer and it's sort of helped me gain more consistency and solid ball striking lol I am definitely noting what you've said and will see what I can figure out!

With your speed, you can't go wrong with the X-100. I have the tour issue X-100's and haven't looked back.

Those are what I was looking at mostly, but unfortunately they're out of stock until jan/feb. I've got project x 6.5 coming and if those don't seem to do the trick then x100 pulls might be where I look.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised how much you will like the PX 6.5’s. Your swing speed may be a tad on the lower spectrum for a 6.5, but you should see a decrease in spin and a slightly lower ball flight.

I have gamed the 6.5’s the past 3 years in Mizuno MP-18mb and have loved them. I’m currently bumping up to the 7.0’s looking to lower flight and decreased spin - and just a little better control overall, but My swing is faster and a little quicker tempo than yours. You have a great swing btw. Hope those 6.5’s work out for you!

thanks! I've been on the rapsodo MLM more and it seems like my driver swing speed according to that is fairly consistent around 110 mph. I have the 6.5's now and I've been swinging them but I ALSO put on the mcc plus 4 grips on there and I'm not in love with those so I'm switching those out. the only thing I really don't 100% care for is that the 6.5's feel so much lighter, and from what I've read it's 125 g vs 130 with the c tapers so it doesn't seem like a big change. still trying to figure out what I'm doing I suppose but I think my buddy has some x100s I might pick up from him if possible!

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
