Membership at Latrobe GC (Melbourne)

Hi folks,

 

I am looking at membership options for a few of my golfing buddies (we're currently at Box Hill) and Latrobe is one of the courses we're considering both on price and location. 

 

I've been digging into some of the forums lately to try and figure out what the course conditions are like through the winter months and was hoping that someone may be in a position to get back to me. I played there last Friday and was impressed by the layout, the aesthetic and the quality (lush fairways, consistent greens etc).

 

As a point of reference, Box Hill will have large mud patches within the majority of fairways at it's worst, and you will often lose balls that dig deep into the mud. I would not be particularly keen to spend the cash and then find out that it is largely the same.

Hey. I’ve never played there but I did buy some clubs from the pro there about 15 years ago (great guys).

 

I do know that because of its proximity to the Yarra that in winter it is prone to flooding on some holes. If not flooding, it certainly gets pretty wet. I believe there is a stretch of holes right along the river that are most affected.

 

I can’t say it closes every winter but I do know that it has closed for a few weeks in the past. If it were me I would seriously consider if you are happy to pay that kind of money to potentially not play for an extended stretch through winter. 
 

Some people are OK with this. But if you absolutely have to play every week you might want to consider somewhere else

Also, I would add that most of those courses along the Yarra are equally affected - Kew, Green Acres etc

I played through Box Hill in the winter, and it was a real slog, so pretty used to it by now. All of us live along the east, with easy access to the Eastern hence why we're kind of looking around those area.

 

Had some real interest in Spring Valley and Keysy, but SV just ended up being a bit to expensive and Keysy a little bit far away. Latrobe and the other Yarra Courses are actually fairly reasonable when you can breakdown the joining fee, and the annuals are pretty solid for under 40s. I've decided to submit a membership to Kew and will chuck myself on the waitlist.
