I'll just leave this here. I can't overstate the importance of what Ben Hogan demonstrates.

I've seen this pic referenced many times and I always want to ask "Where is the clubface pointing when he is holding the club?". Does anyone have an answer?

I would imagine square or slightly open.

With my grip, it's about 30° closed. Presumption always leads to an incorrect conclusion. IF Hogan doesn't mention where the face is pointing in that illustration, the readers are left to simply presume. Since he played a fairly neutral grip, I would presume the same as you did. However, it would be foolhardy to presume it would be the same for everyone. BTW, I agree with his instruction on how the left hand should be placed on the grip, I just have my left hand in a stronger position in relation to the clubface.

He was describing how the heel pad on top stops any twisting of the grip in the left hand because it forces the last three fingers to pull up. It makes the wrist hinge much easier as well. If you put your left hand on like the photo and it's 30 degrees closed, you probably need to reexamine how you hold the club.

LOL. I'll take that into consideration.

Hi all,

I know there is a huge thread regarding his teaching but I had a specific question about his grip. I typically hold the club in my fingers and he teaches the club in the palm of the top hand. What has been everyone’s experience with this? It feels so different but I am going to stick with it. It feels like my wrists are not working properly and that I have no strength. I have his book and understand his reasoning. I was just curious about how others went about adopting the grip and how long it took to feel comfortable.

thank you

The lead hand can never be totally in your fingers or the grip will shift in your back swing. All proper lead hand grips use partial palm..

If you are posting in an MDLT thread, nobody gives a crap about Ben Hogan's grip.

Manny's grip is neutral.  Both V's point to the center of the chest.  When you grip the club, set the club down at address and open the hands, both palms should face each other.  Pretty simple. With this grip, if swing the club as Manny teaches it will fly straight and long.

By the way, if you were to take a lesson with Manny and you were a competent and experienced golfer and your grip was "not perfect" he usually would not mess with it if he felt it did not interfere with executing his concepts.

 Yes.

My grip was inspired by Hogan decades ago and worked, then learning Manny's swing it was EASY to modify that grip by simply rotating my lower/trail hand as it was a shade "too strong"  I have never changed my left grip since the beginning of golf.  After one session of the adjusted trailing hand, if felt entirely natural.

I thought MDLT's book and clinic and videos well explained it. As Pearl says, Manny doesn't mess with an established grip that works, nor a putting setup that works. His focus is on the swinging aspect, all else is subservient to a free swinging action of the club through the ball to the target. A balanced grip is what works best, find your balance.

The only real difference with the MDLT grip is that it's more balanced and neutral simply because the entire setup is the same way... 50/50 balance, club in your center, shoulders parallel to target line, etc. It only makes sense it would be this way.  The entire MDLT philosophy is about being neutral, balanced and square.

I have poor shoulder flexibity due to lifting weights and with a palm grip I regrip at the top with both hands. Jack Nicklaus said this was the most common flaw of amateurs, and I was no execption.

Recently I saw a video of John Daly placing the butt of his left hand on the top of the grip and then wrapping the fingers around the club finally made me understand how to hold the club. I am aware of Hogans graphic but until I saw that video I wasn't able to make a connection. This grip has changed my golf swing, I no longer regrip and my accuracy is much better.  Also, with this finger grip and Daly's forward press move I finally have decent hand and arm mechanics that enables me to swing easier and still get good distance.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.
