Bay Area Golf Clubs Info (Master Thread)

Recommended Posts

Hi - I’m moving to the Bay Area next year and trying to get a sense for what the private golf club scene is like. Have not decided on Bay or East Bay yet so welcome any and all info. We currently live in the Midwest and are members at a Club that has hosted multiple PGA events so we are not totally new to this. I’m quite aways from turning 40 so would probably qualify for a junior membership at most spots. I play in pretty much every tournament at my current club and we have a decent junior membership base which translates to a very social atmosphere. Some of the info that I’ve gathered so far:

Olympic - Great rep, but sounds like there are too many members and playing Lake course requires a different level membership. I assume this translates to fighting for tee times, tournaments and 5hr rounds.

San Francisco GC - Not gonna happen

Cal Club - Can’t find a ton of info other than it was redone a few years back and looks amazing. Assume cost is high but that doesn’t necessarily rule out for me. Wondering how difficult the process is to join. Are we talking one member to sponsor you -or- 5 sponsor and 5 co sponsors?

Lake Merced - Solid course. Use to be predominantly Jewish club. Probably not as costly or selective as other peninsula courses.

Orinda CC - Looks super old school and membership average age probably skews that way. Course looks short but challenging. No clue on cost.

Claremont CC - course looks super short and not sure I’d want to commit all my golf to here. Not sure on cost or selectivity.

TPC Stonebrae - Club Corp property so probably more of a golf club than country club. Course looks really fun with decent elevation changes. Cant imagine cost or selectivity is that intense given that it’s owned by CC.

Again, looking for any and all info. Please add other tracks!

I live on the peninsula and have a buddy at Olympic. He has the lower membership (city membership I think it’s called?). I have never heard him have an issue getting a time on the Ocean course. Not sure how many Saturday mornings he’s playing though. You can still play the Lake course with that membership, but I think it’s limited, you pay, and you can’t bring guests.   They also have a par 3 course on the ocean.
I have heard really great things about Cordevalle but it is pretty far south. Not sure where you are looking to live. Getting there can be brutal during commute times from the north.

TPC Stonebrae isn't part of club corp as far as I know.

Great course that's always challenging. It's my first year here and I love it.

I have a buddy that's at Olympic and we exchange rounds.

The main thing is where you'll end up settling down (SF/Peninsula/East bay/North bay). I live a few minutes from the club so it was a no brainer for me to join.

I think we are going to be ending up in the East Bay... at least initially. Not sure longer term where we might be.

@kdphan - My bad on TPC Stonebrae. I thought all the TPCs were managed by Club Corp. Are you able to share any details on initiation and monthly, round numbers are fine. I'm looking for some data points as I imagine other clubs in the area would be priced similar. Were you looking at anywhere else besides TPC Stonebrae before you pulled the trigger on it? What has your experience been like over there?

If you're moving to east bay not sure this will be a help but I am a member at the Presidio Golf & Concordia Club.  Presidio is a public track but is beautiful, historic, generally in great shape (the heavy rain this time of year notwithstanding) equal to the conditioning of TPC Harding Park etc and is all around a great test of golf with a lot of elevation change and hanging lies similar to Olympic.  The PGCC is a private club that has preferred access to the course as well as a fantastic restaurant, locker room facilities, tournaments and social events.  It's super affordable as far as bay area memberships go, and I've been very happy with my membership since joining last year.  If you're interested shoot me a DM and I'm happy to discuss.

Edit:  I also recently played Green Hills CC which was an original Alister Mckenzie design, since changed a bit, but it is part of the Mckenzie society of courses.  I don't know much about membership costs but it seems like a great facility, has a pool etc, if you're interested I could get you in touch with the member who hosted me.

Check out Diablo CC, Contra Costa CC and Blackhawk CC (2 courses).  Each has a different vibe but solid options in Danville/WC area.

Two sponsors are required at cal club

Cal club is fantastic but pretty exclusive.

‘East bay is a little tough.

‘Richmond CC used to be really good and close to EB.

the courses in Alameda are nice, they are public but may be good to try before you join somewhere.

‘castle wood is in Pleasanton but not sure of memberships.

Green Hills on peninsula is great and not as expensive as other clubs in that area.

I live in East Bay and play frequently.  If you're going to live east of Caldecott Tunnel, forget about any SF courses or Meadow (Marin, which is fantastic, buddy gets me on at least 6/yr pre-COVID), unless you don't mind spending 2 hours driving there and back before even hitting a ball.  (I love the O Club along with Lake Merced, but can't see the schlep being worth it) Orinda is definitely old timey, short, small greens, but nice and convenient.  Contra Costa CC is a nice track and will likely be convenient with a younger membership and cost will be about $700/mo.  Oakhurst is not as nice and bit farther out, nice layout but condition leaves something to be desired.  Sequoyah in Oakland is old school but not as expensive and in really good shape, only issue is older membership.  Claremont is very old school (no shorts, EVER!), short with very small greens but great condition, membership is not um diversified at all.  Good luck.

Just like any major metro area, the most important thing is where you live. Talk about a nightmare logistically if you live across town from your course. I mean, unless we are talking an elite course, why would anyone want to do that? SF, LA, Chicago, NY,etc. these are major PITA commutes for almost anything and first consideration should be your home. Even if you lived in the East Bay, would you really play Meadow Club several times a week, or visit? It maybe your 2nd club as you would probably join another closer to home as well.
