Greenkeeper?

You know in the past I often heard that it was 'Greenkeeper' not 'Greenskeeper' and the Greenkeeper was not happy if called a 'Greenskeeper' as the responsibility was for the entire course and not just the greens.  I see 'Greenskeeper' quite often now days and I wonder if this distinction is no longer the case?  Maybe this in one of those things that has been lost to time or possibly it was simply a losing battle?  LOL I am always careful to use 'Greenkeeper' anyway...

I'd never hear the term greenskeeper until auto-correction came along and kept changing greenkeeper into greenskeeper. It only does that because someone programmed it to but I don't know who the culprit was.  Some American, probably 😬

The USGA says the word superintendent pretty much makes the question moot, greenkeeper is the proper term.

Agree.  I believe, at least in the US, that the term "Superintendent" is now the dominant term.

A superintendent "has executive oversight and is charge of something"

The title Golf Course Superintendent is only a grand way of identifying the Head Greenkeeper.

Not all greenkeeping staff (ie greenkeepers) can be superintendents.

But I've never heard of "superintendent" in relation to a golf course outside the USA.

Sometimes the title is all about the person's ego, self-importance and pay scale. 🙃

Makes sense, my stat is more accurately expressed as green in regulation.

Sure for you when it’s singular.😉

Now as we are at it, is 'anyways' correct? I was taught 'anyway' but this version with s in the end seems to be very popular nowadays.

Your question made me check as I always use "anyway." The Oxford English dictionary points out that anyways is used in North American English as an “informal or dialect form of anyway.” It went on to explain that anyway is an adverb and an adverb cannot be made plural by adding a "s" to the end.

The adverb  onywise  has been in use in the Scots language for a long time, being derived from an Old English phrase.  It is still commonly used in speech and in the transcription of speech.  My own lips have been known to utter it.

Onywise, I have things to do or I would spend longer exploring the matter.

I learned a long time ago that a superintendent is a head greenkeeper in the US.  It's sounds grandiloquent and before I learned the meaning, I thought a superintendent was like a club chairman LOL.

I've read greenskeeper often so this post is clarifying, especially after @rogolf's explanation.

Since this is a language thread, is there any difference between club chairman and club president in the US and the UK?

In my club and in my general experience, the President is more of a 'figure head' position. He would represent the club at important functions etc not directly related to actually playing golf. Within the club they would have no executive position (ie would not be on the formal committee/board) but would be seen to be an impartial 'elder statesperson' and would only be directly involved in disciplinary matters.

In contrast, the chairman would chair committee/board and General meetings.  They would fulfil a similar role to the chair of any company. eg https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/chairman of the board

In my club specifically, the President is elected biennially by the members of the club. The Chairman is elected annually by the other elected members of the committee/board.
