Do you club twirl?

I love seeing pros do a club twirl, especially at the end of a tournament they are wrapping up with that last shot.  I'm not sure I've ever hit a shot that would justify a twirl, but I've been known to show off a good one right after a hosel rocket.

Just to clarify, a “twirl” is different than a “helicopter” right?

Are club twirls a bad thing? lol I have club twirled after some very well struck shots that just made me feel really good and confident in the moment for sure. I don't think club twirling is necessarily a "showboat" type thing as much as it is just being zoned in to the shot and and committing to the swing and following through with your plan and everything working out perfectly (for the few times it does happen lol). Is it the "showboating" that gives it a negative perception?

I will sometimes but it’s inadvertent and much smoother than when Tiger and JT do theirs! They have to manipulate their fingers and intentionally do it. I just let go of the grip enough and the shaft slides down and I catch it at the hosel. Club naturally spins on the way down.

Exactly. I've done it now and then after those rare shots that are perfectly center-club flushed, and the ball flight is exactly as visualized. (Happens, like, once or twice a year ... 😂)

 

And weirdly, it is usually inadvertent, almost unconscious. Certainly not meant to show off or something, is more like the body's almost instinctual way of quietly celebrating (anyone else have the same feeling?)

 

There are some that probably do try to "showboat". Remember playing with this guy (didn't know him, I just got put with his group as a single). Sort of a newbie, and had clearly watched too much golf on TV. Seems like he twirled at least once on every hole. Absolute funniest? He swings out of his shoes on a drive, it got lost in the sun, but he apparently though he had hit a great drive. In truth, he had gotten under it and hit a pop fly. He does this twirl with the driver, and just as it ends, the ball comes straight down, almost plugs ... barely made it past the red tee box. His friends were almost falling down laughing. And made a good joke of it for the rest of the round. The guys started twirling whenever they hosed it out of a trap, or plunked it into the water. On the last hole, one of them left a long putt about 10 feet short - and twirled his putter (never seen a putter twirl before). The guy was good natured about it ... in fact it turned into quite a fun round.

Yes, the club twirl is just another figjam move. "Look at me, ain't I great ?"

 

I mean, I GET why a professional, or aspiring-to-be a professional, does it. Make people sit up and take notice !!!

 

But amateurs ? Casual players ?

 

Nope. Never twirled a club. Never pointed "1st down" or spiked a football. Never pounded my chest after making a layup or held up my arm(s) rounding the bases after a dinger. Never ripped off my shirt after making a goal.

 

I was always a Mark Bavaro type. Catch a TD pass and hand the ball to an official. Never thought I was "all that".

Nope.  When I have tried the damn shaft sticks on my glove about half the time, which looks even more foolish than if I executed the club twirl properly.  As hard as golf is it did not seem like a good thing to practice or spend time learning…

Oh I absolutely do, easily the best part of my game. Don’t want to brag but if I am being honest my club twirl game is elite and probably tour level, not just journeyman but competing for the the FedEx Cup level pro. The fact that it gets me made fun of by my friends is icing on the cake. Unfortunately I only get to break it out once in awhile.

Nah, no time. Club is normally back in the bag before the ball is down (can’t see it land ((poor eyesight, not good distance)) anyway, so might as well get moving!

 

Plus I wouldn’t know how to do it anyway 

 

C’mon NXS, if you’re going to use an NFL player as an example of someone who exemplifies the “act like I’ve done it before” (which I wholeheartedly agree with BTW) after a good play, it just HAS to Walter Payton.. Has to be!😀🍻

I'm a New Yawker. Saw Bavaro every week on TV.

 

Bears games were seldom on TV in NY so I seldom saw Sweetness.

How about the one-handed finish? The universal sign of a poorly struck shot. Matsuyama does it frequently and the ball ends up 15 feet left of the flag. 😃.  I see a bunch of average players doing it too.
