I've never done it, i don't think it looks particularly cool even when Tiger does it to be honest.

I love seeing pros do a club twirl, especially at the end of a tournament they are wrapping up with that last shot.  I'm not sure I've ever hit a shot that would justify a twirl, but I've been known to show off a good one right after a hosel rocket.

Do you twirl?

yes, but only one club.  My ball retriever when I snag a newer prov or other premium ball.

Are club twirls a bad thing? lol I have club twirled after some very well struck shots that just made me feel really good and confident in the moment for sure. I don't think club twirling is necessarily a "showboat" type thing as much as it is just being zoned in to the shot and and committing to the swing and following through with your plan and everything working out perfectly (for the few times it does happen lol). Is it the "showboating" that gives it a negative perception?

I don't twirl the club, but I had a (former) friend tell me I hold my finish pose too long and he thinks it's arrogance.

Exactly. I've done it now and then after those rare shots that are perfectly center-club flushed, and the ball flight is exactly as visualized. (Happens, like, once or twice a year ... 😂)

And weirdly, it is usually inadvertent, almost unconscious. Certainly not meant to show off or something, is more like the body's almost instinctual way of quietly celebrating (anyone else have the same feeling?)

There are some that probably do try to "showboat". Remember playing with this guy (didn't know him, I just got put with his group as a single). Sort of a newbie, and had clearly watched too much golf on TV. Seems like he twirled at least once on every hole. Absolute funniest? He swings out of his shoes on a drive, it got lost in the sun, but he apparently though he had hit a great drive. In truth, he had gotten under it and hit a pop fly. He does this twirl with the driver, and just as it ends, the ball comes straight down, almost plugs ... barely made it past the red tee box. His friends were almost falling down laughing. And made a good joke of it for the rest of the round. The guys started twirling whenever they hosed it out of a trap, or plunked it into the water. On the last hole, one of them left a long putt about 10 feet short - and twirled his putter (never seen a putter twirl before). The guy was good natured about it ... in fact it turned into quite a fun round.

[That's my only twirl story.]

^this! I don't think to myself, "oh nice shot, time to twirl it so everybody sees!" it just sort of happens. that's why it's never meant to be braggy or anything like that, just a feeling of accomplishment for myself

Nope.

Yes, the club twirl is just another figjam move. "Look at me, ain't I great ?" :classic_ninja:

I mean, I GET why a professional, or aspiring-to-be a professional, does it. Make people sit up and take notice !!!

But amateurs ? Casual players ?

Nope. Never twirled a club. Never pointed "1st down" or spiked a football. Never pounded my chest after making a layup or held up my arm(s) rounding the bases after a dinger. Never ripped off my shirt after making a goal.

I was always a Mark Bavaro type. Catch a TD pass and hand the ball to an official. Never thought I was "all that". Dunno1.gif

fair thoughts I suppose. I know some guys like that who think any sort of celebrating achievements is arrogant and unnecessary. I think it's just something to each individual and adds a little something fun to the games. 🙂

How about the one-handed finish? The universal sign of a poorly struck shot. Matsuyama does it frequently and the ball ends up 15 feet left of the flag. 😃.  I see a bunch of average players doing it too.

oooh yea, that one I do sometimes 5-6 times a round lol if I feel the miss in the face, I immediately lose all hope for humanity and barely hold onto the club (never thrown a club though, and don't plan on it!)

I was thinking of this with the guys who are against twirling lol if anything seems to be arrogant, to me it's the holding the pose on the tee box well after the ball has landed and you know where it's at. GET OUT OF THE WAY AND LET THE NEXT GUY TEE UP SO WE CAN MOVE ON! lol just a minor annoyance I have with folks sometimes

I have no idea if any of my playing players twirl because I'm following the ball flight and not watching their follow through.

I personally don't twirl.  I think the "start walking just after striping it" is a boss move.  You can do it if you're in a cart and somebody else is driving.  Just don't be that guy who does it and has to walk back to pick up your bag.

If I absolutely pure a shot...and assuming I actually held a good finish position, I will probably twirl the club.  Sometimes it's a good twirl, and sometimes it doesn't twirl as intended and the club head almost hits me in the face.  As others mentioned, on really bad shots, I'll also pose and twirl just to mock myself.

It's a game...I intend to have fun while I'm golfing, and in general, I don't take the game that seriously.  I've certainly had my fair share of club twirls that end up in a bunker instead of on the green, and I'm more than happy to let my buddies get a laugh out of it when it happens.

Oh I absolutely do, easily the best part of my game. Don’t want to brag but if I am being honest my club twirl game is elite and probably tour level, not just journeyman but competing for the the FedEx Cup level pro. The fact that it gets me made fun of by my friends is icing on the cake. Unfortunately I only get to break it out once in awhile.

Only when I fly a green. True story.

Nothing gets your juices flowing like knowing you just put the ball into that sloppy mud hole of a pond behind #15 when it's still just hitting its apex... club twirl time and a lot of mumbled 4-letter words.

A bag of left-handed junk.

Damn right I do, but typically only when I bomb a drive 60 yards past everyone.  That or I let the shaft obnoxiously bounce off my back and point back at the ball like I just hit a walkoff home run.  Sometime's I'll combine the two into the double-whammy.  Then I give my group the "suck it" sign and jump in the cart and take off, leaving them wondering what tf just happened.

Club twirl is so last decade. Club flip is what's in now. My playing partners now know not to stand behind me.

Nope, I do something even more arrogant. If I hit a shot that comes off exactly the way I wanted to as in contact, initial direction and traj… I don’t watch it at all to me the outcome is irrelevant. I just turn around and go back to my cart or bag. Hitting that type of shot is 95% of why I play this game.

The only way you can get away with doing this is if are the best ball striker in your group. It actually works pretty well..if the shot turns out great as it should if you do this…everyone comments on how it looked good the whole way. It also works the other way..if your shot you thought was best you could hit and it goes into the drink, everyone thinks you knew right from

the get go that you hit it poorly😂

Just to clarify, a “twirl” is different than a “helicopter” right?

A “helicopter” is when the club is lateral with the ground; future HOFer McIroy “helicoptered” the club into the lake at Doral in 2015.  Tommy Bolt, already in HOF, would “twirl” the club down a fairway.
