Looking to join a league or mens group to play 9 each week

I love playing 18, but what I really want is some stability in my game.  I would like to play in a relaxed league or a group that plays 9 every week.  Thursday at 4 pm type of outing.  

 

What's the best way to go about this?   Just call up random courses and ask if they have something like this?

Yeah man, just ask the pro shop guys at the local courses you frequent. The courses around me all have at least two or three leagues - men's, women's, seniors. 

 

The leagues I've played in were lots of fun. Got to meet some great guys and really enjoyed having that weekly "competitive" round, even if it was just nine holes. 

 

Plus, if you have a good partner and can play consistently, you might even get a prize or two at the end of it all.

Thanks for chiming in.  Just wasn't sure if I needed something special to start playing.  handicap app, or some membership etc...

Generally speaking, no, you don't need a handicap. All the leagues I have played in will calculate a handicap based on your league play only - helps to cut down on the sandbagging and enables everyone to play.

I'm part of a grassroots Thursday night 9-hole league. It was started by a friend of mine about a decade ago just to corral some co-workers for some post-work golf and beers. Eventually, they starting inviting friends, and friends of friends. I've even dragged some fellow WRX'ers into it. The e-mail list is now like 30 people, and we can fill up 12 spots in minutes; other weeks, we'll have trouble fielding a foursome. We start when the clocks spring forward, stop when the clocks fall back. Many of the people in the group are residents of a local parks district that gives them 7-day advance tee times, so they will book 2-3 foursomes at least 2h15m before sunset. The problem is that it's a very popular parks district, and you basically need to be on their website exactly at 7:00:00.000PM on the 8th night prior to remotely get anything good. Sometimes the pro at one of courses will hook us up with prime evening spots before they are available to the public, but he's doesn't want to do it too often. If we can't get anything good, we'll expand our geography to other area courses to find decent tee times.

 

It's a super-relaxed group of golfers where the main purpose is to walk the long way from the parking lot to the clubhouse for dinner and beers. Hardly anyone in the group carries a handicap, but we occasionally play best-ball match play and give pops when necessary. Trash talking is highly encouraged, and losing team buys beers. The abilities range from single cappers to shank every other shot. I really look at this Thursday night outing as a way to loosen myself up for the weekend when my actual golf league plays.

 

About 15 years ago, I organized my own work golf league. Spreadsheet and everything. But it was too much of a hassle, so we just went out and played once a week after work.

 

tl;dr - find some golfing friends, book tee times, organize games if you want (or don't and just keep it social), develop relationships with the golf course, and keep inviting more people that may want to join

Yes most courses will have one. The way my local one does handicap is they either figure it off years past, or how you play the first month before March play starts
