MacGregor Tommy Armour Silver Scot vintage blade putters

Recommended Posts

Anybody have a feel for the value of xxxx’s on the hosel?  I have one, but no interest in selling it.  Just wondering why the excitement.  I swear I saw a couple in a collection years ago where the X’s were stamped on the bottom, not the hosel.

Also, studied up on the 3852.  Apparently sold with the 3852 iron sets in the early 50’s.  Stamped with the number.  Those marketed separately were stamped the same WITHOUT the number.  See photos above in one of the responses.  It’s the cursive Master’s…with the apostrophe.  Still wondering how this came to be.

If it is a PGA product, I think the early 80’s is about right.  I think PGA bought the naming rights and added the 708, 709, 710, and 713 to the MacGregor variations.  The 708 is the IM (Iron Master) with no offset from the shaft.  You can usually find them on EBay by searching PGA Tommy Armour putters, Napa putters, and Vintage MacGregor putters.  Enjoy!

The double XXXX rows were 1963-1966 models.  A favorite of Jumbo Ozaki and very popular (and expensive) in Japan back in the day.  Much cheaper today.  3852s were pre-war and yes, the "Iron Master's" are the earliest versions, 1935-1939.

came across this putter head, no signature...it's heavy, seems to be satin-like coating over brass...sorry about the color,

.just wondering where this came in the years

The lack of the Tommy Armour name makes it post '67 and the font screams to me 70's or 80's. Doesn't help alot but perhaps narrows it down a bit.

I am wondering if the finish is the "non glare" finish first used at the end of the Mac Tommy Armour era - circa '67. Here are pictures of my non glare against a slightly earlier "standard" finish. It is not pretty and a little rough to touch but functional.20210206_165955.jpg.12a986f422e6cd1cc6e7509a68c36649.jpg20210206_165913.jpg.67efa61f61657fcc41791b9ba4b9acd4.jpg20210206_170035.jpg.4c6775c72af5a0bee9278922f7e7aded.jpg

The font in those days was also more elegant and attractive in my opinion.

Thanks, I have no idea...it's the only Iron Master I have & it was in a container of hickory shafted heads....I have a  Ray Cook "unfinished" brass/becu/??? head putter that is a wee bit heavier that I may reshaft w/something...so am wondering what what might make a good shaft for this Iron Master head?

WOW Tour Stage Japan issue yep $$$$$ and like you can not justify the price but man it is nice--- Thanks for enlightning me

Saw this modern MacGregor gooseneck putter and thought you guys might be interested (the copper insert with the wavy milling = caught my eye & recalled the similar IronMaster version that @Buzzkill shared via tourspecgolf)

(includes a Link to an unlisted Youtube video, with more details of the putter in Japanese language ... ignore the imperfect google-translation (or view with a bemused smile)

...perhaps @No_Catchy_Nickname can help decipher/opine on the google-translated captions/transcript

... e.g. there's no way the transcripted/ translated words at timestamp ~0m59s to 1min mark = accurate for a golf putter review?

Transcript at ~1min shows the following:

..Screengrab of the closed-caption subs: "特殊な音がして当たった感じがある。"
...Google-Transcript: "女陰がちょっと特殊なてぃ感じがありそのだからなんですねやっぱですから立派だなぁ")

...Translated Screengrabs of the japanese closed-captions seem ok, e.g.
... at ~0m56s: "打感はどうでした?"... "気持ちいい!!!"
...at ~1m05s: "カッパーフェース(ダブルミーリング仕上げ)ソフトな打感でスムーズなストロークが実現!!"

I'm "blaming" you nice folks for influencing me on the merits/ appeal of these Iron Master putters.

Recently... i was offered these 2 items (see photo) for "1 pc = ~$15... buy both for $~25). Grips = non-original but seller replaced with pristine GripMaster leather grips. (i.e. the bundled price = less than the cost of the grips?)

I recognise the "IM" ironmaster... but not the "101M" sibling (i bought both as part of the bundle deal).  The "101M" appears more bladed / less of a caboose vs the "IM" putter.

...Any insights pls?

Nice putters--- I am putting with a reproduction Ironmaster I found a few years back. It is a moniker of the 40s Tommy Armour with the green Pyratone shaft. Mine has what is labeled as a glass steel shaft which seems to me like a Steelfiber. It does have the original Neuman leather wrap grip.

Stu, I have a Lloyd Mangrum putter with a "glass" shaft. Does yours look anything like this?20220711_182438.jpg.f88e63044b30820d15c5f8aa7a5d96e1.jpg20220711_182341.jpg.5918d5166cd2ec968dc80131c9486654.jpg

Mine is a OD green with a little luster.

Edit=== I went out a few minutes ago and looked in detail as I was cleaning the grip. It is a Composite shaft. That and the overall feel reminds me of a putter I miss which was a Yonex ADX 8802 style with a composite shaft. I gave that Yonex away for a good cause. I let a young pro friend of mine use it and he passed his PAT with it and loved it. I let him trade me some kind of TM Spider for it which I sold. That guy still putts with the ADX some 6 years later. Never regretted giving it up. Course it was a scrap pile find and I had like 0.25 in it and sold the TM for $100. But honestly I was going to give the kid the putter but he insisted on trading me
