What's the "easiest", well-maintained course you have ever played?

Recommended Posts

Riding off the back of the "what's the hardest course you've ever played" and the "what is resort golf thread" I thought I would like to hear about nice golf courses on the easier side (not necessarily the ABSOLUTE EASIEST but pleasant surprises). Several important caveats:

(1) Course should be in good shape and not just a featureless, wide open dog track

(2) Course should still be interesting and have a variety of different hole designs

(3) Course should be public or available to the public in some form or fashion

(4) Ideally it is the type of course that "looks hard" but plays easy.

(5) Just because someone says a course is "easy" doesn't mean they had to shoot under par or play it from the tips

(6) Personally, I would like to hear about more well known courses that play easy for travel planning purposes. Don't like to get punched in the face on vacation.

With all those caveats, I find I have always scored extremely well (relative to what I shoot at other places) at Pursell Farms in Alabama. I don't play the course long (I play the Whitetail tees which are about 6400 yds) and I am not saying the course can't be challenging to certain players or from farther back but, to me, this is the kind of golf I like to play. The course looks like a nice resort course, offers a host of different looks off the tee, has some elevation change, greens roll well etc. All of those things make it look challenging but a combination of wide landing areas, medium sized greens, limited rough make it quite friendly. I am typically about 4-5 shots better out there than I am at similarly rated courses.

Curious to hear other people's experiences/opinions and if there any spicy disagreements between other users.

Course is rated 151 isn’t it? Lol!

I think I played blues which are 133, and the was 3 clubs down coming from the east coast. Sub 6000 yards at that elevation is extremely short... Just found it pretty easy for a course that in theory/pictures looks extremely difficult. Hardest shot of the day was the first tee box realizing I hit through the fairway and lost my ball because they yardage is so different.

Redfield in Eugene, MO.  It's a very nice course with bentgrass greens and fairways, but I found it to be reasonably easy to play compared to others in the Lake of the Ozarks area.  It was a blast.  I need to get back there soon.  It's been way too long since I've played it.

How about talking stick. Fairways are nearly 100 yards wide. There’s not an elevation change for 2 miles in any direction. You can roll the ball up onto every green. It’s a resort course so they keep the greens about nine for speed.
Yet  I always have a lot of fun there!

And that is kind of the gist of all this. For most of us (maybe not on this board but golfers in general) it seems like a great "destination" golf course should look hard but play easy. Nothing worse than planning a golf trip for months finally getting there and getting ejected over and over. The best example I can remember is Pinehurst No. 8 where everyone in our group shot close to our highest round of the year.

@isaacbm we are headed out to Scottsdale this year and playing We-ko-Pa (both courses). Would you say those are on the easier side like Talking Stick?

IMO WeKoPa courses are a great mix.  They arent going to beat up a recreational golfer terribly, but they definitely are resistant to easily scoring well.  The very good golfer will find a challenge, and the high handicapper will find a bit of reprieve (more so on the Saguaro course)

No not really… the Crenshaw is more friendly then the other though

Wild Horse, NE - actually all the courses there in the Sand Dunes of NE (Dismal River, Prarie);

Good call re the NE sand hills region courses.  So much wind out there that they all need to be very wide.... and they are so.  Thus when there is no wind, each can be had.  But get the wind blowing and easy they are not.

This goes for Sand Hills GC clearly.  Many guests tend to shoot all time best scores there.  With no wind.  🙂

@ryder2015 I think Sheep Ranch is the course I most want to play at Bandon for that reason (followed by Old MacDonald). Would be studying the weather forecasts to see when the wind was lowest and try to play then, haha.

Based on this recommendation we just swapped out a course for our Scottsdale trip in favor of Talking Stick O'odam Course (North). Looking forward to it! The landing areas seem to be at least 60 yds on most par 4s and 5s and the fairways look super flat. All good things in my book for a relaxing round!

Gamble Sands.

https://www.gamblesands.com/sands-course

Holes/fairways are contoured in a way that there is lots of ways to hit a good shot and very few ways to hit a bad shot. Hole 6 is great example, you can fly the ball 220 yards to the green or, hit a 120 yard wedge and let the ball roll down the hill to the hole. Both result in a birdie putt.

Very fun course, and it is truly hard to shoot a bad score unless the weather kicks up.

Yes, Raynor. It's a pretty straight forward golf course, nothing tricky about it. Not many members so it is in PERFECT conditions. Awesome, true greens.

You have my attention! Been looking at Cabot as a bucket list trip. Love that it is walking only and the prices, while high, are not as eye watering as I thought they would be.
