Irons: paintfill on the bottom groove?

It seems like a lot of irons used to have paintfill in the bottom groove, or maybe I'm misremembering things from years ago. 

 

I have a set of Srizon ZX5's that I like so far, but something about the visuals of the club has me wanting to set up with the clubface closed. My last four sets of irons have been from the same brand and I've never noticed this as an issue before. 

 

I have some paint pens and am considering paint filling the bottom groove on each iron. Would this be helpful as an alignment aid?

I think that was the idea of it right, the white bottom to groove to help you keep it perpendicular to the target line. Try it out, easy enough to remove after if you don't like it. (maybe just try it on 1 or 2 irons)

 

Same idea has been used on lots of putters as well so there's gotta be some merit to it. If it makes you feel better at address and rid you of the thought that you aren't correctly aligned, may work out well for ya.

would it be a conforming addition as it has the potential to make direct contact with the ball?  I like the idea, and like me05501, remember it pretty fondly from a set up perspective...

Your not misremembering. Many irons had that feature as far back as the 80's.

Thanks all. I did my 5-pw set and my non-matching gap wedge today. We'll see if the paint holds up.

Ping irons still have them, I think I'm going to try that on my Srixons cause why not easy to add and remove. 

 

The new Rogue irons have the bottom 2 grooves paint filled.

I’ve been itching to paint something. Great idea! Going to give this a go with a paint pen I haven’t used in a while.

I did my HMP in white and P760s in black…I really like the pop & aid with setting up square.  I think you’ll find the same.  
 

4 rounds with HMP and no deterioration. P760s have only been used indoors so far.

I almost did the bottom two. The bottom one only is very subtle.

 

Srixon use two different groove width/depths through this set. The long irons have bigger grooves so the paint is easier to see.

I'll check mine I have the 585 and 785s. Also have to decide which paint I'm going to use but honestly takes like 30 seconds to apply so don't mind if I have to reapply if I like it.

According to Rule 4.1a (3) it says that applying any substance to the clubhead (other than in cleaning it) to affect how it performs in making a stroke is illegal under the Rules of Golf. However, in my opinion there is enough ambiguity in this rule to bring it into question. Grooves have always been painted, and as far as I know there's never been any question of them affecting a stroke.
