Reshafted Irons -- Every Club Creaks.... Ferrule or Re-Do?

So, I just finished rebuilding my clubs for the 2022 season.

 

Switched out my BB&F Co. Ferrules, got new grips to match.

 

Here was my procedure.

 

1. Torch Heads, remove

 

2. Drill bit to clean out hosels and shafts

 

3. Cloth drill bit dipped in acetone to deep clean hosels and shafts

 

4. Sandpaper on shafts to prep tip

 

5. Final once over  everything with acetone to make sure everything's totally cleaned out

 

6. Mix epoxy, Golf Works Tour Set 1:1 by weight and volume, to the 10th of the gram.

 

7. Install Ferrule with tiniest amount of epoxy

 

8. Install heads, spinning several times

 

9. Allow to dry, 24 Hours

 

10. Turn Down Ferrules

 

11. Shine Ferrules.

 

I've rebuilt my clubs a few times now... but don't remember them ever creaking. The epoxy set up really well on the paper plate I mixed it on.

 

Heads are on solid. Gave them absolutely full force and they're not going anywhere, but there's a small "crunch" noise when I apply pressure.

 

Thinking it's maybe the epoxy between the hosel and the ferrule? 

Do I just roll with it and fix any clubs that fail down the road?

 

Do I start over?

It’s most likely the ferrule and the epoxy creaking. Don’t skip on the epoxy under the ferrule. I’ve also found if there is no epoxy between the ferrule and hosel creaking never happens

Agreed, probably the ferrule creaking.

 

Either epoxy it all the way in or no epoxy.

The ferrule is epoxied all the way... I would assume it's whatever is between the ferrule and hosel.

A few seconds with a torch might stop the creaking.

Please don't do this.  The ferrule can melt, and it won't do the epoxy holding the head any good either.

 

Golfworks Tour Set epoxy leads to more troubles than any other type of epoxy discussed on this board...by a huge margin.  I'd throw that junk in the trash.

 

The part about spinning the head several times is not good.  This is not necessary and only pushes epoxy out of the joint.  After inserting the shaft, 90 degrees of rotation is all that's needed.  And before installing the head, it's important to coat both the hosel ID and the shaft.

I would think this is the issue. In order for the ferrule to creak, it has to be moving, and rubbing against the hosel. The only way this could happen would be not enough epoxy.

Unless you set the ferrule slightly too high on the shaft, leaving enough space between the ferrule and hosel so that the ferrule could move and rub.

Was there any epoxy squeezing out below the ferrule during installation?

Maybe a touch. Might have gotten a little sloppy with it.

Wrap the ferrule in a wet rag and hit the hosel with a torch for a few seconds.

Take one of the heads that creaks.  Cut the ferrule off.  If it doesn't creak anymore, you have your answer.

I would agree with the Golfworks Tour Set epoxy being at least part of the problem. When I had my repair shop I used it a few times for repairs where the customer needed it right away and had several that made the noise you describe.  Switched epoxy and never had the issue again.
