Cap Rock Ranch

Starting to plan a trip out to the Prairie Club this summer (most likely sometime in June), and noticed that the course that won Golf Digest's Best New Private Course, Cap Rock Ranch, is located literally right next door.

 

Does anyone know if they have any times set aside for guests staying at the Prairie Club to play at certain times of the day/days of the week, or they strictly a members-only club? My guess is the latter since I can't find anything on their website, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

they do not, very difficult tee time to acquire at this point. Best of luck to ya, I know Prairie members that can’t get on.

I've had several friends who have played/joined Caprock and evidently it is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Hoping to get a chance to play it sometime this summer when I go back to Prairie Dunes and then take a short 7 hour drive to Caprock. 😂

Know a few who have played it now.  They had mixed reviews on it.  Common statements was its good but a few holes  "need tweaks".

 

Latest rumor is they are looking to adjust some of the holes that have blind shots.  Which I was told there is fair number of them.

Bumping this in case anyone has any leads/connects. Hitting Ballyneal -> Dismal next weekend but would love to play the Hanse masterpiece that is CapRock, as Rustic Canyon is my go-to local these days. No dice through TG yet, wonder if a club pro letter would do the trick.

I have nothing to add re CapRock.  I have not played it but I toured it last year... it looks very cool.  But my sense of access issues there echoes those stated in this thread... you have to know the right person.

 

To that end... did you try to gain access to Sand Hills?  Unaccompanied guest play is extremely tight post covid, but some have still had success via writing a letter to the club.

 

To be that close to Sand Hills and not play would be a bummer.  To that end... Prairie Club is incredible and also very very much worth playing - both courses.

I played CapRock last summer. Conditioning was good, not great but it was VERY early in the season for up there. The second day it was running much quicker after a mow.

The holes along the canyon edge are SPECTACULAR. Lots of them feature an infinity green look. The conditioning (it certainly wasn't bad in the least) and the ho hum feel of the inland holes had me questioning how great it was overall. Or were the canyon holes just THAT spectacular that they overshadowed the inland holes? There are some blind shots on the inland holes, or maybe better stated the view was impeded depending where you were on the hole. I have heard they are considering raising a few of the tee boxes. Since Gil Hanse is building a home there, it's likely a place that will have a lot of ongoing tweaks over time.

My understanding is it's rarely busy out there given the limited membership and proximity for most of the members. The hang out back at the fire pit is AMAZING. The clubhouse and shop are very nice. Nothing majorly over the top, but very appropriate for what they're going for overall. Lodging very good as well.

It had a bit more of a corporate vibe there than pure golf/enthusiast vibe in general? Maybe just who happened to be there when I was hosted?

 

Certainly a very awesome place. It's not an easy get even if you know a member I don't believe. No unaccompanied in general. I'm uncertain if a pro or GM from a reputable club could get you on even? They may be willing to host you for a play if considering membership.
