I would say the average size of a PGA tour player is no taller than 5'9".  my guess most play std lie on their irons and maybe 1* flat on the wedges.

How are you judging that exactly? Taller guys will typically go a bit upright, shorter guys standard or flatter. I think the only notable exception are guys like Kuchar with very flat swings.

i'm saying most of the guys probably play std lies more than anything else in their irons.  Kuchar is the exception now, remember he had a very upright swing when he first came on tour.

If you were replying to me then my question was aimed at the OP. I agree with you, although I think there is a correlation between height and success on average (taller is favorable).

Perhaps it because flatter lie helps curb the left miss is what I'm guessing.

Flatter lie trend has been happening for awhile now I thought.... Ever since the launch monitors started to somewhat accurately measure dynamic vs. static lie angles.

The old trend of adjusting lie angle by height is no longer accurate, as most fitters recommend going by dynamic lie.

Having said this, I dont know how many tour pros are willing to change from 1 or 2 upright to 1 or 2 flat, as I would imagine it would completely change their visuals, but I dont really know.

Maybe its to help produce more left to right spin axis?

Where did you get this info? I'm a big WITB nerd and haven't seen this data.

From the view on TV down the line from behind the player, most guys seemed to have their hands very low with the club shaft being very flat. Also I don’t see many WITB that give club specs like lie angle. Where do you see that?

Depends on the job. Horse racing for instance or gymnastics….

Rory is pretty successful. There aren’t a lot of elite golfers over 6’1”. DJ, Miller, bubba, Justin rose?

and yes, I’m short. Blame my parents. My irons are 2 flat

That's why I asked the question. Lie angle specs are rarely given yet you make the statement "Most of the guys at the Sony Open seem to be playing irons with pretty flat lies".

If you're making this statement from down the line TV views then you have a far more calibrated eye than me.

I don’t think my eye is any better than yours. But to me the lies on many of the guys irons looked obviously flat with their hands very low at address. I know Kucher is an outlier on flat lies, but many other guys didn’t seem that far off him. That’s why I raised the question. Check it out on the Sony replay or an upcoming telecast and see what you think.
