Wedges same series?

Vater

Recommended Posts

Are all your wedges from the same series? For example, among your non-set wedges, are they all SM8s or all T22s or all RTX Zipcores? Or are they mixed - some SM6s and one SM8, for example? Or a couple T22s and an RTX?

I’m thinking of changing my 48 and 54, probably to the same model as each other, but keeping my SM7 60* as-is.

I guess my question is, when you change your wedges, do you change all of them?

This question gets asked every 3 months. I have no problem addressing it. Here is the only correct answer…

You specialty wedges need to be produced by the same company. They don’t need to be the same exact series. You can have 7 different brands of irons, I don’t care, but only a commie plays different brands of wedges.

I only use 3 wedges 48, 54, 60. Whenever one gets changed they all get changed to the same model, I can’t personally look at something different on each wedge.

No reason other than OCD but my wedges should match but there are exceptions.

1) GW, SW and LW match

2) GW doesn't match but SW and LW must then match (my current setup)

3) GW and SW match but the LW can be unique (I'm thinking of some full-face high toe LW)

Look at some of the pro’s WITB’s. It’s not uncommon to see 1 wedge totally different than the other 2-3. I feel each wedge has a unique function. Gap wedge is exactly that: a tweener between PW & SW. Sand wedge is all around versatile utility club around the greens. Lob wedge is for emergency use (short sided, high lip bunker, flying all the way to the hole). Usually the SW or LW can be from a different OEM or series.

Commie or a hippie? My outlier is a PM grind 60 that can't be evicted. I  love my matching miura 60, but I'm with the PM grind.

Right now no nothing from the same series or year. My new set of wedges who knows maybe not, doesn't matter if it works.

I have a 56* Cleveland CBX but ordered a 52* Edel wedge.  The Edel will be for full swing <100yd shots and the Cleveland is for green-side/trap management.  Different purposes, different brands.  I have no problem going to a common brand if I find one works better than others though.

And about a 3rd of the PGA Tour.

Play whatever works, who cares if they are the same brand.

I could see if you have clearly different uses for your wedges I could see mixing grinds to fit the cause. But generally my wedges are played pretty much the same, so I want consistency. So when I change one, I generally change all.
