Vokey Wedge Grind Dilemma

justcallmemoses

Recommended Posts

I love the S grind on my SM7 56 degree Vokey and literally use it for everything inside of 100 yards. Probably the best pitching club I’ve had.

I have an M grind 60 I rarely use but use it off hardpan or shots that I can’t get enough height quickly greenside with the 56. Is there another grind worth trying? I’m not comfortable with the m grind on partial pitch shots as it doesn’t feel great through the turf and get gets a bit resistant. I’m by no way a digger/steep so a bit confused.

Is the D grind bad off tight lies?

I practice short game a lot but just can’t get comfortable with the M grind. FYI I’m a 4 handicap

I would say try the L grind or the low bounce K grind. The low bounce K will be much more forgiving due to the wider sole and having more camber. The L grind will get under the ball off any lie but you have to be more precise. In my opinion for the highest lofted wedge the low bounce K with a little heel relief is the perfect grind. I would steer away from the D grind because it will present much more bounce which would not be good for bare or thin lies. I’m not a fan of the M grind myself so I understand your dilemma… I’m playing a Zipcore Tour rack full grind 60 with heel and trailing edge relief which is very similar to the low bounce K grind. There not a lie I’m not comfortable with using it.

What type of grass are on the courses you usually play? I mean how often are you pitching from hard pan?

When you use your 60.....are you keep the face square or opening it up?

The only reason to use an M or D grind is if you manipulate the face.  The D is the same grind as the M, just with higher bounce.  As to your question for the D grind, it is fine off of tight lies if you can either A. pick it cleanly or B. are comfortable with closing the face slightly to reduce bounce.

The D grind should help create less resistance through the turf in longer grass.

Why not just go with a 60S if you love that feel?

Yes I do open up the face and close it depending on the shot with the M grind and very partially with the S Grind.

It’s square shots with the M grind I don’t feel it goes through the ground well. I’m tempted to try S grind in the 60 but feel by doing that I’ll improve the square faces shots but make the open face shots worse. I guess it’s a trade off

The D grind is a more forgiving M with the additional bounce.  It won't "stick" in the ground like the M, more effective traj control on full/partial shots, and will be better out of most bunkers.  The only downside to more bounce are extremely firm lies and bunkers (just play those with a more square face to keep the lead edge lower).

Based on what you are describing I would either go with the D or order a 60S in Raw from wedgeworks and then have them add heel relief.  That would essentially get you the D grind with only 10 degrees of bounce, but the heel relief would help you open it up more.  This wouldn't have the toe relief but you could still close it down slightly on hard pan.

Either way the additional bounce from the M should help your issue with the club dragging on square shots.

I know it may seem like a dumb answer, but go on the Vokey website and do the online wedge fitting tool and see what it recommends for your 60°

I got fitted earlier in the year and I got SM8's (I don't play them anymore cuz I'm saving up for SM9's) but the grinds and lofts I got fitted for were exactly what the online wedge selector tool told me to purchase

I’m struggling with my short game so I’m going with the big wing!  I’ve always been a. Big fan of the K, recently picked up a Low Bounce WW K Grind.  Will report back if I remember!

I would say no to the D grind in lob. I like the M grind myself. Lower bounce, but provides resistance through the turf due to a wider sole. Increasing the bounce is only going to increase the resistance you feel. You like the S grind because it feels faster through the turf than the M grind. As a low cost experiment, smooth out the grind lines on your M grind with a dremel/sanding belt. This will get you pretty close to a low bounce K. I'm not convinced you will love this, but it will make the wedge a little faster through the turf. If that doesn't work, go with the L grind which is essentially a low bounce D grind. The L has more "actual" leading bounce than the M with a more narrow sole and more trailing edge relief. Will feel faster through the ground than M and low bounce K.
