Best launch monitor for small space?

Recommended Posts

Due to Midwestern winters I've decided that it's time to convert the garage into a clubmaking/ hitting bay. Here's the issue I am running into.

The space from my net to the point of impact with the ball can be 8 feet. The space behind the ball to where the launch monitor would be setup is only 6 feet. Does anybody have any experience working in a similar sized space. Which setup did you go with and why? Let's say $1,000 or less as a price point. Thanks guys

1000 USD will not get you very far if you want are looking for a limited flight LM.

The most affordable unit with reasonable accuracy would probably the Skytrack

TaylorMade SIM 9.0*, Oban Kiyoshi Black 65 X

TaylorMade 300 Mini Driver 11.5*, Oban Kiyoshi Black 75 X

TaylorMade SIM DHY 3, SteelFiber i95 Stiff

Then you probably know that the Garmin R10 is the only real option at less than 1000 dollars. It is absolutely a quantum leap forwards in price / spec BUT the jury is out on whether it would work in your space, unless you can borrow one to try.

On the bright side many of us are in the identical situation.

What I've been reading is that you might be able to get away with 8ish feet to the net. The validity of the readings seems to be mixed results at that distance from the info I have been able to find. All in all it's not quite enough space to really take a shot on this. That's the reason I wanted to ask and see if anybody on here had been able to make it work. Looks like mother nature is going to win this battle and I will just have to wait it out until march.

From the Garmin R10 manual it sounds like the specs you gave would fit...

Preparing for a Shot

  1. Place the ball at the desired tee location.
NOTE: The tee location must be at least 8 ft. (2.4 m) away from the net when playing indoors.
  2. Attach the device to the tripod mount (Installing the Magnetic Tripod Mount).
  3. Place the device on the ground between 6 ft. and 8 ft. (1.8 m and 2.4 m) behind the tee location.
NOTE: If you are using a golf mat, make sure the bottom edge of the device sits above the mat.

I’m in the same boat, although I have a little more depth. I can go 6ft to ball and 10ft of flight, or somewhere in that depth. I’m concerned about shelving on the side  which I’m unsure about. I’ve attached an image and would appreciate feedback if something other than skytrak would work. There’s also a tv mounted on the wall on the left.548D5AD3-0A52-4364-B72B-17343FEE19D8.jpeg.6f20e159bb015b4e80713c7b2f575aaf.jpeg

i had my garmin set up 9 ft to net and 7 ft behind and it worked well. Driver and longer clubs might have read short but that seems to also be a problem with longer distances that can be offset with altitude adjustment etc. Or just live with it as you are still seeing good practice. I can usually drive the ball anywhere between 220 and 270 in real life and see numbers on the garmin that might be 220 to 250

Would concur with others that Skytrak is by far the best option currently on the market for limited space indoors. I have one and I'm really impressed with it. Good luck

I have a skytrak and I hit from 6 feet from the screen and only have maybe 5 feet or so behind me. Small space in my garage. The good thing about a photo-based unit like skytrak (as opposed to a radar unit) is that there are no space restrictions. As long as you have room to swing, you have room to use it. I've had mine for about 2 years now and still use it almost daily. It's a great product in my opinion and perfect for a tight space where a radar unit wouldn't quite work.

If you want realistic ball flight, skytrak is the bare minimum you are going to spend. I would not bother with any radar unit in such a small space, let alone the very small ones, unless you are really only interested in ball speed

I've played on my dad's skytrak for a few years, and I've had my own for a couple years now.  I think there is no doubt it's the best value for playing simulator golf.  I would be surprised if it's not the best value for practice and accuracy of readings.

There only reason I'd even consider a radar based unit is if one of my kids (or anyone that plays with you regularly) was differently handed.
