Do Blades negatively impact performance? Or is it all in our heads?

Relax everyone this is all fun 🙂

Unless you support the idea that blades work for all players, and provide an example.

Then you get accused of making things up. Nice.

Yes yes put me in my place and all but he even said that his friend (hypothetical or not) enjoyed playing more golf and got better. I mean, playing more tends to help you get better right?

If someone enjoys playing blades play them!

I kinda feel like playing blades while advocating they aren't for everyone is not a good position in these threads.

It's like prison, i gotta join a side i think.

I’m confused, do you still think his friend is fictional or not? You have a great reputation here and you are better than these insinuations.

Moreover: if someone wants to play more because they enjoy the blade experience, and their skill improves as a result, does that not mean that blades improved their game?

I own a set of blades, a set of players distance and a set of SGIs---i've used all of them in the last 2 years. I have blades right now and really love them, but i also am a good iron player

I support people using whatever they want and golf should make you happy if that's what you're looking for. I just think it's common sense that blades are harder to hit. That's all, i'm not trying to insult anyone or be an a** even though it may have come across like that

Yeah, it was a jerky post i guess. I'm sorry about that. I just meant it's probably not the norm

Still, being accused of having a hypothetical friend is probably number 1,546,789th on the list of bad things you can get accused of in 2022! It's almost a compliment if that's the worst thing you've ever done! I've done like 9 worse things today alone!

I know, not trying to give you a hard time. I've never understood how or why its such a hot button issue but it is. It's not like we do this with blade vs mallet putters (or maybe we do in another thread? oops, don't mean to open that door, if so)

I've been following along with your (somewhat related?) 'winter extravaganza.' Great stuff and looking forward to it continuing when able. Just don't sandbag the blade results! (jk)

Its all the same and it pushes some fallacy that a GI iron will take your (not you personally) crappy swing and turn you into a GIR machine.

... Two of the fallacies I see in these threads are any club will turn your crappy swing into a GIR machine. A GI iron will help your shots turn out better when your crappy swing mishits them. Not a GIR machine but higher, longer and closer to your target. Miss it high or low and a little on the heel or toe and their results are better. There was a reason Ping Eye 2's were being bought in record numbers and on a wait list when MB's were pretty much the only irons available. It dam sure wasn't their looks or feel. Golfers just started having better results with their same crappy swings. The other is MBs are harder to hit and they are not any harder to hit than any other iron. They are just more penal when you mishit them and most golfers mishit shots during a round. Even Hogan said he might hit one shot per round perfectly. It is alway interesting to read how many on WRX are evidently better ball strikers than Hogan.

... I see MB's in the used section of golf stores with ball marks literally off the grooves out on the toe and wonder which WRX mid cap believer that MB's turn you into a better ball striker finally gave up and traded them in. Many of you are too young to remember Ely Callaway that understood golfers ego and produced the original Big Bertha driver with 12* of loft and labeled it 9*, then took a r-flex shaft and put a s-flex on it as a proprietary shaft and all of a sudden golfers were hitting their 9* stiff flex drivers drivers higher, farther and straighter and he could not sell them fast enough but with a 4 year cycle the wait list was up to 6 months in some stores.

I don’t care what type of club anyone plays as long as they keep up and aren’t a complete jerk.  If you crave the feeling of pureing a blade every once in a while then play blades.  If you like telling your friends your 7 iron is your 230 yard club then play strong lofted, hollow body irons.  You do you and I’ll do me.

Golf is hard and the only way to get better is to play and practice.  A $1000 set of game improvement irons won’t help a dollar swing.

Amen.

Blades are awesome when you’re playing well. Nothing during a round of golf feels better than a pured blared iron. I would expect slight less distance and if you don’t have the swing speed, lower trajectory. If you’re off just a little, misses are less forgiving. I do however believe they will make you a better ball striker and they they are more accurate. While you will see good scores, don’t be surprised to also see slightly higher ones too.

Don’t know about other people but I feel dispersion with blades is a little tighter. I have recently moved over to a set blades and fortunately had the luxury of my workplace, a fitting centre, where I could try a whole host of clubs. For me it doesn’t matter whether the ball goes 200yrds with a 7i or 170 with a 7i. If the shorter one is consistently tighter, I would much prefer that.

My game has improved with blades but I feel a lot of it is horses for courses. It’s down to the person to understand their game and make it as easy as possible for themselves. I personally find it easier playing a a T100 right through the bag than playing T200 or a combo set.

On the same day that I sent a set of Mac R58s off to be dipped in copper and aged, I put a set of Cobra T - Rails into play.

The T-Rails were acquired after a month of testing with an instructor whom I know, and have worked with, for more than a decade. The seed was planted after an exchange that was reminiscent of every blade vs CB thread I have read on these forums.

Given that I own 20+ sets of irons, but nothing in the SGI category, I decided to accept his challenge.

Maiden voyage was eye opening and enjoyable.

Another experience in my golf journey. The game, like life, can be viewed from many different angles.
