Re-Grip advice, opinions on size

Hi All,

Currently playing GP MCC standard grips, 1 wrap of tape on all my clubs.  When I got fit for irons, the fitter suggested midsize grips, but I am not a large person and this seems off to me.  Doing some research I found the chart on the golf pride website, which suggest going to Midsize if your hand measurement is > 7/6".  My hand is almost exactly 7.6, so I am on the very low end of this, and high end of standard.

I want to regrip them using standard MCC or MCC +4 grips, but add some extra tape to get in between.  This is the tape I had been using in the past and still have some laying around: https://www.pgatoursuperstore.com/golf-grip-tape-15-pk/1007504.html?cgid=golf-clubs-supplies#start=1

I can't find any thickness on this website or the package itself, so really don't know what it is.

1.  What tape would you suggest I use, would be better to have a roll you can cut to length?  Anyone have a suggestion and know the thickness of it?

2.  Based on the answer to #1 above how many wraps would I have to put on total before it would be the same as just using a midsize grip?  I want to be right in between, so maybe 3 total wraps?

Thanks!

Here's my advice, I'm not a club builder, just a novice who regrips their own clubs and have had lots of practice. I have used undersized, regular, midsize and jumbo. I am currently using midsize + 2 wraps of tape, this feels best to me. We all have different shape/size hands.

Take one of your clubs, take the old grip and old tape off. Then what I do is build up the shaft using regular masking tape (or grip tape, but masking tape is cheaper). Then I take a lubricant, like regular washing liquid, lube up the grip and slide it on - test the feel, if you need to add more tape - go for it. I do this until it feels right, I then apply the adhesive tape and fit the grip properly (after the lubricant has dried up of course). I used to fit the grip, be unhappy, and end up doing it the hard way.

Grip size is all personal preference. Bubba Watson has 13 wraps of tape on his bottom hand, and 11 on his top hand. Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka, who I assume has pretty similar hands to Bubba, plays only 1 wrap of build tape and 1 wrap of regular tape underneath his grips. The only way to figure out what you should do is experiment with it and see what you like

Experimentation is the best way to find the right grip size for yourself.
A couple of suggestions, you can try 1 or 2 wraps of build up tape the tape is .10 thickness (most doubleside tape is .15 thickness). Also if you are using a +4 grip you may not want to build up the right hand so just add tape down the grip about 5”.

Thank you, buildup tape is essentially just masking tape correct?  Non double sided?  And the process would be build up tape, and then double sided over that, then grip?

Yes build up is masking tape…and correct on the process. Make sure you buy a quality masking tape, some of the cheap ones are very thin.

+1. Golf is the only game where the grip is so small. That's because it's also the only game where the diameter of the shaft was so small. There was no practical way to put a grip the same size as a tennis racket, baseball bat or hockey stick on a hickory shaft, so grips started off small, and stayed that way long after technology allowed them to be much larger than in the days of leather wraps. Now that the option for over a half a dozen grip sizes exists the wise move is to try at least three of them.

Middle of last season I had my clubs regripped, playing GP MCC with 2 extra wraps. According to the fitter 4 wraps on a standard grip gets you close to the midsize grip size. It immediately felt better on my woods and irons and I'm very similar with hand size. Two to three total wraps should get you close to the midsize grip.

Tom Wishon said (and wrote) that grip size is all about personal preference.  Grip charts have me fitting into a +1/32 or 3/64 oversize grip (3 extra wraps under a standard grip).  I have tried jumbo grips also, which I liked fine.  Right now I am playing mid-size grips with  4 extra wraps under the top hand and 7 wraps under the bottom hand (on a 1/32 oversize grip  or 2 wraps under the top hand and 5 under the bottom on a +1/16 grip). I'm also a big fan of the plus 4 grips which negate the need for so much buildup tape under the bottom hand.

I'm a short guy with small hands (Cadet Small golf gloves) but I play midsize grips in all my clubs except my SW and LW which have Oversize grips. I find the larger grips to promote less grip tension and they also keep my hands more passive. I would often pull my wedge shots so the oversize grips have been a game changer for me.

Like many have posted above, it's personal preference and feel. You don't need to conform to what a chart says. I've re-gripped a lot of clubs for friends and have an assortment of different sizes. I always tell them to try something a little larger and regrip a couple clubs for them to try (I have a grip removal tool) more often than not they have settled on mid-size or over-size grips.

I've settled on a Jumbomax Medium on driver, Small on 3w and hybrid and standard MCC+4 on the rest of my clubs for now.

It's all about what feels comfortable in your hands.
