Courses around Pine Dunes

So we are making a trip to PD in late March and we have some people flying in from MINN to join our group and they are dead set on wanting to play other courses besides PD.  Plan as of now is to get there Friday and maybe sneak in what we can, 36 Saturday, then 18 and head home to Dallas Sunday.  I know Tempest is about a hour NE which is not terrible and about the same drive home after golf but is there anything else on the way back to Dallas?  My buddy saw Pinnacle GC south of Athens, has anyone played that?  Other options might just be just to get back to Dallas Sunday mid morning and play around town as they fly out Sunday night.

Maybe Links of Land End?

garden valley is on 20 and would be handy but who knows what kind of shape its in.

I would say Tempest is the best public course in that part of the world.

Pine dunes is seriously in the middle of nowhere if you have not been there yet, and public golf in east texas is not very good

I have been there just the out of town people have not.  Of course this is the first year we don't go to somewhere like Horseshoe Bay, Barton Creek, Etc. with multiple courses in the area.  I have not been to Tempest so probably leaning that way.

Is Hideaway public or private and reviews on it?  Like others have said Garden Valley scares me as you never know the condition.

My vote would be either Tempest or come back to the metroplex.  Tempest was fun, but there is better golf closer to home.

I follow PD on IG.  If you dont know it,bunker remodel is under way.  Ive no idea of when they are all supposed to be finished. At least some of the are very close.... so if that matters to  you and your group, you might wanna give them a call to see what that schedule is.

I did not know that and will find out but we have basically 2 months so i think we should be ok.

We ended up just planning on staying on Sunday AM and playing another round there.

Yup, the work seems to be coming along as far as I can tell from IG.
There is one pic posted of one new bunker and it looks awesome.  According to the post, the reworked bunkers are designed and built by  Billy Fuller -  former Augusta National superintedent.

Pinnacle is fine, nothing special.  Short with a few sharp doglegs.  Its on the lake if your group wants to get out on the water though.

@cjblake09 Any update on your trip? Thinking about heading out to PD/East Texas later this year and would love any feedback on courses, accommodations, etc.

Just got back on Sunday and i was exhausted as we got in 4 rounds and had a great time.  Wishing it was more green but everything is behind right now but the greens were great.  They are redoing all of the bunkers and the sand it is so new and fluffy that some of the shots were almost unplayable.  Once they settle down and get packed down they will be fine.

We opted to stay in the new double eagle rooms which are nice but are about double the cost of the older condo's and double rooms.  I would have no issue staying in the other rooms to bring down the cost as we were only in there to sleep.  I was told that the bar/restaurant would close early but they stayed open as long as we wanted them to and the girls were super nice and able to put up with all of us.

Thanks for the update! Did y'all book the Double Eagle rooms online or did you have to call to book those? I was looking around their website, but couldn't find an option to book the Double Eagle rooms.

I called and spoke to TIffany who handles all of the bookings.  They are around $430 a night
