Rory’s clubs at Abu Dhabi Championship

Watching and the commentator said every club in his bag is new. Would love to see a WITB!

McIlory, Hovland, Morikawa, Poulter, Lowry, Hatton, Scott… Nice field!

I’d always take some of these commentators words with a pinch of salt. It could be totally correct - TM have new woods and new wedges out. Add in the regularity with which Rory seems to chop and change his putters then that would leave us with irons. Can’t see a completely new, never seen before set but maybe just a fresh set of what he had been using before.

I was also most curious about the irons. I mean, we all know what the new woods are.

Essentially the TW setup and close to DJ's bag. 5 wood and 3 iron with 3 wedges. Most players pick one club for the "3 iron" slot and have 4 wedges. Clearly some of the best players in the world see a benefit to having both 5 wood and 3 iron while losing a wedge. You would think a shorter hitter might want more clubs at the top of the bag and a longer hitter would want an extra wedge. TW, DJ and Rory are definitely not short hitters.

High Bounce wedges, nice! I love my HB 52 & 58, really easy to hit.  His 54* could have been strengthened to reduce the gap between PW and 58.

If his wedges are unaltered, there’s an 8 degree gap between his PW and 54 wedge. If his PW is strong, it just creates an unacceptable gap to the 9 iron. If the 54 is weakened, it makes it pretty much unusable as a SW. The remaining high bounce 58 is much better as a sand wedge than LW, which he has effectively abandoned.

You should reach out to his team and chastise them for this massive oversight. Better yet if you go through his round yesterday and point out instances where his poor gapping was the culprit for some of the poor scoring.

Unacceptable gap? Maybe, just maybe, the best players in the world could choke down or take it easy on a specific club?

Valiant effort, but as mentioned that is a P770, not a P790. And with all of his woods lofted down two clicks, that puts his 5w around ~17.5* which would gap perfectly with a PX 7.0 shafted 20* 3i in that P770. Rory has long used 3i/4i replacements in things like the P760 in the past. 

As for the wedges, Rory has long mixed and matched between 47*/48* and either a 52* or 54* which i'm pretty sure is standard for him.

Rory going to from a PW 47-48° to a 54° isn’t crazy. I’ve done it my whole time playing golf. It’s a feel thing. I got 47° PW to 56° sw and in the past 54°. I can’t get a feel for a 52° wedge and it’s useless to me. I have better control of knocking and choking down on a pw so that may be what Rory is going with, a certain feel.

It’s interesting to see most of TM’s staff that play blades are still in the P730’s and not the P7MB’s. I get that there’s not much tech change in blades but I do find it interesting.
